Toward A Fake Flash Drive Free World – No More Counterfeits – No More Data Loss

Report A Fake 2008-2010 (April)

The Fake flash memory wars are raging. Especially on eBay!

Please report your fake flash memory seller to us – see below for the information we need. We do not have all sellers of counterfeit and false capacity usb flash drives, mpx players and memory cards on file. Your contribution helps everyone.

Addresses of sellers from your mailing envelopes are very helpful. It helps us to spot fraud rings operating on eBay. Use the search box and type in your sellers id, if there is an article make sure to leave a comment and also your progress in dealing with him.

As of June 2009, SOSFakeFlash announced a zero tolerance policy. One confirmation can lead to an alert against an eBay seller. We need to reduce the number of victims, too many being frauded. Regards, From the Fake Flash Angels at SOSFakeFlash

Any company who had been involved directly or indirectly with a transaction involving fake flash memory items is liable and responsible – if they chose not to respond to the situation or take the warnings issued by customers seriously. To ignore the issue is to condone it.

If you have confirmed that you have a fake (purchased from eBay) and you wanted it entered into the database as evidence so we can post an alert or update counts against a seller we will need the following information from you:

  1. eBay item number
  2. eBay Seller id
  3. Your eBay Buyer id (d0n’t forget this please)
  4. Your output from H2testw 1.4
  5. eBay item description title
  6. Seller address complete if you have it (mailing envelopes, eBay, PayPal). Important to build profile and track multiple id’s
  7. Seller email address
  8. A short word of you experience and or thoughts if you like (optional)

Reminder, your eBay Buyer id is NOT  published on the internet when you report in to us. eBay fake flash memory seller ids are published on the internet to warn other buyers.

If your seller used private auction listings to hide the listing, or a multiple item buy now listing please send a screen capture of the listing to help us cut down on the investigation time.

To capture your buy now listing is very important if the seller is not on file with us (eBay Fake Memory Seller Lists) , if the seller is suspended you will lose your evidence and so could we.

Send this information directly to sosfakeflashdrive@gmail.com

We will not enter information into the database from a public site without 1-4.

If you are reporting several sellers (it happens) please keep the 1-8 pattern. Easy to understand, the more you save us time the faster we can investigate and enter.

There is no time limit in reporting a seller, you can find a lot of information inside of your paypal account for proof. We have had cases as old as 18 months from purchase being reported. It is why recording in a database is so important.

SOSFakeFlash is very strict about collecting information, data that can be supported and has witnesses to the fake flash memory deed. The alerts and posts we publish – are based on evidence.

The data used used to build the list of fake flash memory sellers on eBay. It is also used to issue summary reports on the problem. Data from victims helped us to produce this report: Global Report – eBay Fake Memory 2008 – 2009 , a two year effort. If anyone wants to dispute with us, we can send them an angry mob of fake flash victims. So if you would like to have your item(s) recorded for the record please send us the information above to: sosfakeflashdrive@gmail.com

It is important to report even if the seller is already on the list or an alert is issued.

It increases the counts and evidence against the seller and for the degree of fraud on eBay too. . We publish the sellers and the current counts in our eBay fake flash sellers list. We also produce statistics and reports from the information you send.

In your feedback please put the calling card of “SOSFakeFlash” + “H2testw“. It helps people to find us and get help. It also unnerves fraudsters as it means their days are now numbered. If you left positive feedback, do a follow up to your original feedback – to let everyone know what you discovered. This makes a difference too. If you have a little time, contact at least 5 other buyers from your fake flash seller to warn them to test. It’s a chain reaction, it helps others, reduces victims and soon brings these fraudulent sellers to the attention of both PayPal and eBay.

New 32GB SD SDHC Flash Memory Card 32G Secure Digital from Ebay Seller: sunfeixia2009.
As he had no negatives at the time, I had contacted him prior to purchase to receive his guarantee the capacity was genuine (I had mentioned the H2testw). Even contacted one of his customers who assured me his card was OK.

Needless to say mine tested as a 2GB fake & I’ve since contacted 4 of his other customers who report theirs are also fake.
This crook is presently doing a roaring trade in these fake cards daily. Paypal has given me 10 days to return this dud to the seller to obtain my refund.
I replied with a protest that as he is still selling these items, that paypal accept responibility for the return of a fake item probably to be resold on to other victims.
The mailer be clearly marked with the message “Returning counterfeit item to seller on instructions from Paypal” in order to negate my responsibility with Customs in this breach of the Law.
    Am waiting for a response.

    George,

Surprisingly, several buyers have also told me they were OK. Not sure if they are actually testing.

Have you submitted a report here? There has been no alert issued yet.

You might want to try alerting paypal to this section of their user agreement, particularly the last sentence.

    Paypal User Agreement, Section 13.4

In the event a seller loses a Claim, the seller will not receive a refund on his or her PayPal or eBay fees associated with the transaction. If you lose a Significantly Not as Described Claim because the item you sold is counterfeit, you will be required to provide a full refund to the buyer and you will not receive the item back (it will be destroyed).

    Definition of counterfeit

    made in imitation so as to be passed off fraudulently or deceptively as genuine; not genuine;

I posted here a while ago that I have bought a 32 GB Pen Drive over eBay which was a fake. Ever since then I have sent over 45 messages to every single buyer of SD cards and Pen drives from my fake seller and at least I got him removed from eBay. Everytime I took a look at his feedback section and saw that another buyer gave him “5 stars” I introduced the software to them and asked them to test their drives!

    well,

“mygodyeah” is no longer a registered ebay member. Even though I know that he’ll be back in no time or has several accounts already, I won. I and the other buyer kicked his Chinese butt!!! I got my money back too and I hope that every buyer I wrote to, has opened a dispute too.

Here’s a seller with fake Kingston 128GB Drives:

    Seller info:rugclean
    Item Number: 230427529438

Refunds your money, but it will cost you to ship it back. Drives are not supported by ReadyBoost, Privacy Software indicates that the drive is not supported, write and read speeds are only 1.33 Mbps, not 20 Mbps as advertised, Kingston indicates they are fakes …….

“Surprisingly, several buyers have also told me they were OK. Not sure if they are actually testing.” – Not to sound too much like a conspiracy-theorist, but could any of them possibly have not been actual buyers, somehow? (Does anybody know if this has happened before?)

  6. Hi, yes I used to sell fake flash drives but as soon as I realised I stopped selling them. As you can see I’ve changed into another field of selling school wear, hunch the reason why I changed my eBay ID Yes I had made a mistake before and will not be doing it again.

here’s one seller, although they are no longer registered to Ebay.

    fengxiamai1357

i bought (2) 32GB MP3 players back in May 09 from this seller that turned out to be fake hacked 2GB devices. they gave me $10 back on one of the two players i purchased.

i also got burned by another seller that is listed.

    chenwubang88

i bought a 16GB USB Pen Drive that turned out to be only 1GB.
he offered me a full refund and said to keep it the pen drive, but never gave a refund and changed his story. glad he is no longer a seller; to my knowledge.

    ………….
So heres the real deal….This is actually the second memory card I have purchased off ebay in the last month or so.
I realize now that the first one I purchased was also a fake. I thought it was simply defective so I emailed the seller for a refund. Upon receiving no response I took my claim up with paypal. Paypal told me I had to return the item to the seller and I had to supply a tracking number. The tracking information was costly, which made the return shipping cost about 2/3 of what I paid for the original item. Hardly worth it, but I did it anyways.

This being the second card I have received that did not function properly I did some research and found this site and many others which explained the situation to me.

Also I just wanted to add a BIG THANKS for all your hard work, you can add me to the list of the informed.
I hope my report helps the good fight.

i think i may have found a person that may be pumping up their +FB ratings to sell fake flash on Ebay. i know they recently purchased a 64GB Pen Drive from another seller and suspect that this is how they start the FB ratings. if i’m wrong about the smoking gun i found, then i’ll stand corrected; but if i am right on my suspicions…. this will then be a new fake seller to look out for. check out their FB and notice all the “no longer registered” people they bought from.

    Thanks DragonDakel,

I guess I will start to collect the evidence and saving all emails and item description ans put it all in a folder until the drive arrives so I can get the info from that too, then i can open a dispute with paypal… I am lucky in one way it was only 29 dollars could have been worse i guess. I am just peeved at myself for being taken in like that lol.

  22. Ross,

    See http://fakememorysentinel.wordpress.com/2010/02/25/thefamilystorage-ebay-flash-memory-seller-china-test-immediately-for-advertised-capacity/

    number sold has almost doubled.

The Kingston usb flash drive situation grave. On Friday afternoon FakeMemorySentinel is publishing a new guide to assist people.

We hope it will help. It should be useful for those required to use the new eBay resolution center available in certain eBay regions to settle disputes.

$21,489 US has been earned by thefamilystorage. It will continue to rise. A DT200 128GB at $29.99 US?

Any person who bid on one of these Kingston fakes and as yet has not paid thefamilystorage for the item, contact eBay and have your bid and obligation canceled immediately.

The price speaks for itself. There can be no dispute. For those who have purchased from thefamilystorage and are currently awaiting arrival, read the new guide, to be prepared and ensure you have a response from Kingston at hand.

Do report into SOSFakeFlash as well with your evidence, so thefamilystorage is documented lists. Unfortuantely SOSFakeFlash will not issue a formal alert without an offical confirmation.

This seller, thefamilystorage demonstrates clearly the issue on eBay. Also the magnitude of fraud inflicted on eBay members for over seven years.

Exactly how many sites are needed on the internet to educate people to stop bidding and buying usb flash memory technology sold on eBay?

Do prepare Ross. We doubt you expected to be drafted to fight against fake flash memory sellers on eBay. You, as all frauded buyers need to fight back. Otherwise the problem will continue

    Hi,
Recently I purchased two mp-players claimed to have 16Gb memory from 2 different sellers both based in HongKong, after testing with H2testw 1.4 both turned to be fakes, both crashed during/after test and currently both are just dead (do not respond at all – can not be detected by computer, can not be switched on either)

    1) date of purchase Feb. 21, 2010 , received March 3, 2010 – amount paid AU $44.00 ($39.63)

    eBay item number 390160047434
    eBay Seller id bid2buying
    Your eBay Buyer id oksanakis55
Your output from H2testw 1.4 – sorry, I did not save the outputs, I did not know it’s important thing to do, all I can remember was something like “The media is likely to be defective, 3.5 GByte OK, 12.1 GByte DATA LOST…”

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390160047434&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Seller address (complete) if you have it – I don’t have it yet, but claimed to be HongKong based

    2) date of purchase Feb 22, 2010, item received March 3, 2010 – amount paid GBP 29.00 ($43.66)

    eBay item number 220559934565
    eBay Seller id digitsonic
    Your eBay Buyer id oksanakis55
Your output from H2testw 1.4 – sorry, I did not save the outputs, I did not know it’s important thing to do, all I can remember – test was not finished as at certain point the player just crashed, blank display, unresponsive, and it is still dead (despite numerous attempts to turn it on)

Seller address (complete) if you have it – I don’t have it yet, but claimed to be HongKong based

A short word of you experience and or thoughts if you like (optional)
    Some remarks:
    1) during the auction both sellers used “private listing – bidders’ identities protected” so I suspect those bidders were fake, too

    2) both items though coming from 2 different sellers were in 100% identical packing, no sender address indicated, no documents/ user manual included, no brand name. It’s very likely that bid2buying and digitsonic are in fact two IDs for one fraud seller based in HongKong

    3) I was contatced by another honest buyer from FakeFlesh Angels team and warned of a risk to get a fake flash mamory from bid2buying it is already listed as a fraud seller at https://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/report-a-fake/

    4) after I discovered fraud (both items are really fake!) I sent unsatisfaction messages to both sellers claiming my money back, none responded so far; I am going to open the official dispute on ebay/paypal hoping to get full refund

    5) I am going to fight to force ebay/paypal to provide real protection to decent ebayers and to punish those fraud sellers. Even if I fail to get my money back I will do my best to make the life of those robbers harder. I’ve just gave both fraud sllers the negative follow-up to my previous hasty positive feed back – it reads “BEWARE of FRAUD item FAKE 3.5GB instead of 16GB DEFECTIVE google SOSFakeFlash” – hope it prevents other buyers from dealing with those criminals

digitsonic and bid2buying are already on the list of fraud seller here, but they continue cheating and robbing decent buyers as their listings are still full of the irems identical to the fakes I’ve got. If you’re about to purchase any of the following, please, think twice!!! You’re going to loose your money:
    BEWARE OF FAKE: 16GB 2.8″ Touch Screen MP3 MP4 MP5 Player 16G RM RMVB from bid2buying
BEWARE OF FAKE: 16GB Touch Screen MP3 MP4 RMVB Media Player 16G Camera from digitsonic

Thank you for raising the buyers awarness and helping us to stand up for uor rights!
If we are many – they can not ignore !

NEWS FLASH PEOPLE!!! THE FAKE DRIVES HAVE REACHED THE NEWER MODEL OF KINGSTON DATA TRAVELER 200 32 GB!!!! IT IS NOT ONLY FAKE, BUT IT IS BEING SOLD DIRECTLY HERE IN NORTH AMERICA!!! THAT’S RIGHT! IT IS NOT JUST SOLD ONLINE, BUT EVEN THROUGH FREE ADS SITE LIKE KIJIJI CANADA. I LIVE IN TORONTO, CANADA AND WAS BROWSING AROUND FOR FLASH DRIVES WHEN I NOTICED THIS SELLER: NAMED JOHN OR VICTOR NEWMAN SELLING THESE FLASH DRIVES:
    http://mississauga.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAdLargeImage?AdId=190206029&ImageIndex=2

CHECK IT OUT!!! YOU WILL NEVER GUESS AT FIRST GLANCE THAT IT IS A FAKE!!! BELIEVE ME I WAS FOOLED! I EVEN INQUIRED ABOUT THE PRICE AND YES HE SAID HE WAS SELLING IT BECAUSE HE HAD TOO MANY FLASH DRIVES SINCE HIS COMPANY ISSUES HIM FLASH DRIVES FOR HIS WORK. AND WHEN I EXPRESSED MY INTEREST TO BUY, HE WAS VERY FLEXIBLE! I TRIED USING TWO LOCATIONS, MISSISSAUGA AND TORONTO, AND HE WAS VERY FINE WITH MEETING ME AT ANY OF THOSE CITIES. WHICH REALLY MADE ME WONDER WHY, SINCE MOST SELLERS ONLY WANT TO MEET AT THEIR ADVERTISED CITY IN KIJIJI SINCE IT IS A HASLE TO GO IN ANOTHER CITY, BUT THIS GUY WAS FINE WITH IT!

BACK TO THE TOPIC AT HAND, LOOK AT HIS PRICES! VERY CHEAP! LOOK AT THE PICTURES AND YOU WOULD BE FOOLED! BUT I AM GLAD THAT I CHECKED FROM THE KINGSTON WEBSITE AND YOU WILL FIND OUT THAT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A DATA TRAVELER 200 THAT IS 16GB LET ALONE 8 GB, AND THAT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A DATA TRAVELER 200 32GB THAT IS YELLOW COLORED!!!

What I meant was there is no such thing as a Data Traveler 200 32GB that is colored like that in the picture a color Yellow and Black, since that Color code scheme is ONLY for 64GB Data Traveler 200, and that THE REAL 32 GB Data Traveler 200 IS COLOR CODED BLUE AND BLACK.

    Evidence here at Kingston Website:

    http://www.kingston.com/flash/dt200.asp

As you can see the range of the capacity of the Data Traveler 200 series is ONLY FROM 32 GB TO 128 GB.

Their respective Color Code Schemes are as follows:
    http://www.kingston.com/flash/dt200.asp?id=2

As you can see this is what I meant from my statement above, as you can see from the seller’s pictures, his 32gb Data Traveler 200 is Yellow and Black colored, which doesnt make sense since that is the color FOR 64GB one. Also he has a 16GB Data Traveler 200, which doesnt make sense since 16GB is not one of the capacity range for a Data Traveler 200, also notice that his 16GB and 32GB Data Traveler 200 is THE SAME! Same Color only different capacity, I say SHENANIGANS! That is why I love Kingston, you can tell the capacity difference, not just from the label of the capacity or size, but the color codes! Each capacity in my experience from whatever Data traveler models ALWAYS had different color codes for each capacity. There is no such capacity that have 2 different colors and especially there is no such capacity that have the same color as another different capacity.

So I hope that my findings will add the list of Fraudulent Flash Drives. Man it has already reached North America in selling local flash drives that are fake! Dam counterfeiters!

here is the actual main AD from the seller.

    http://mississauga.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-other-Selling-8GB-16GB-32GB-USBs-W0QQAdIdZ190206029

You can still access this ad when you click my link in my first post and click the “Back To Ad”

Anyways look at his 3 pictures and you will be surprised! They look really really authentic! I would even led to believe that this case is really an authentic kingston one, BUT they NEVER showed the BACKSIDE of the case LOL! Also Observe that he even sells an 8GB Data Traveler 200! As I told you before in my last post, there is NO SUCH THING! The minimum range of capacity for a Data Traveler 200 is 32GB! The minimum price I found on Amazon (directly linked from Kingston main website) is on sale for $79-$80! And this seller is selling it for $35!

Sorry for my long post, but I believe that this warning should come to the attention of many people, that sellers of fake flash drives isn’t isolated in ebay, amazon, or other online sites anymore. They are here in North America, selling locally on local free ad sites like Kijiji and Craiglist. I don’t know about in the US, but is clearly reached here in Canada. Worst thing about is, the fakes are looking more and more like the Authentic one, I am glad that in this case it was obvious by the color codes. I am afraid that one day these fakes will look exactly like the Authentic ones if somebody doesn’t step in and stop them. Oh well, hope my posts were useful to you all!

OK, It looks like the drive has arrived, although I wasnt in so need to pick it up from the delivery office in the morning, but the tracking number is the same as the one supplied.. (please see a few posts up).. I want to do this correctly so, do I format the pen drive before I test it with h22testw?
I have everything else set up, Kingston are waiting for the photos to be emailed to them so they can confirm weather or not its a fake, I have screen shots and ebay web address of the items listing.

Once I get the drive in my hands I will send the photos straight away and complete the h22testw test.
I can then submit a report to sosfakeflash whilst leaving feedback of the negative nature.

I just want to make sure that I am doing the test correctly is all.

    thanks

Just an update on this guy from ebay thefamilystorage’ it seams he has made his feedback private so noone can see his 9 negative feedback. Also, I tried to contact a guy who had bought from him last week, but ebay has blocked my attempt to do so. It looks like noone will get the chance to warn others about this guy cause you cant view his feedback comments.

  35. The_Flash said

As far as I’m aware, you shouldn’t need to format the drive first. Just plug it in and run the test. 🙂

OK, just a quick update, got the drive and running test as I write, I uploaded a few picks to photobucket if you wanna view them

    http://s51.photobucket.com/albums/f369/zafod37/Fake%20ebay%20flashdrive/

I have to say the photos dont do it justice, the packaging is very very good and the drive itself looks the part minus one detail of course, the metal connecter is void of any numbers what so ever. I have sent photos to kingston and am awaiting a reply.

I have hit a snag, I ran the H22test but got the following error message.

    Error creating file ‘E:\119.h2w’.
(The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. Code 1392)
    Writing speed: 3.78 MByte/s

    any suggestions?

    @Ross

You will have to take the usb flash drive apart. Carefully. Decode the usb flash drive controller chip, then the flash drive storage chip. To try and fix it, it is the only way to search for the right low level formatting tools you will need. Decoding the flash drive storage chip will help you decide if the effort is worth it.

They are selling Sony USM32GL\E 32GB flash drives that are fake!

Pictured in the advertisement is the “Wrong Packaging” Sony never had packaging as such, close but not close enough. I would know, I own several OEM Sony USM32GL\E.

They have as well pictured the “Wrong Colors Of The OEM Sony USM32GL\E. By close inspection of the pictured items that they have posted, one can tell the flaws of such.

This seller is a fake, they have Kingston printed across a pic of the Sony Fake USB LOL!

Looks like I fell for the scam, too. just bought yesterday on ebay 128GB USB stick for $20.98 “Buy Now” Waaay to good to be true, guess I should have done more research! Paid via paypal. This morning I found a message from ebay they closed auction.
    SELLER: kaihuachachang (ghugjgyu@sina.com)
Now I’ll have to go to resolution center.

I am emily1000cc and purchased a “128Gb” usb drive from “stevie73” on ebay. Item no. 270543816260. It arrived eventually…very slow delivery for a local vendor. He was listed as PO BOX 2222, Woorim, 4507 (at Bribie Island) and I am in Brisbane City (4000)Both very local addresses. The postal fee charged was substantially more expensive than it cost. The item was different to the item listed and displayed. The seller has since been removed from ebay so will not reply further communication. I have undertaken the H2testw test on a portion of my memory stick and so far,it has tested corrupted. The packaging on the item I received states it is a 256mb unit. It reads as 128GB, so someone has butchered it I would imagine. I have applied thru ebay for a refund so I can drive a hammer thru the unit. Be warned to all out there, the online test is a good thing!!! I found a lot of info at http://fightflashfraud.wordpress.com/?s=stevie73
Results for the test are as follows:-

Warning: Only 5074 of 129968 MByte tested.

  43. “stevie73” was banned on ebay for selling corrupted and phony 128gb memory sticks. Now his partner “jo3314” is selling the same ones.
    Item no. 140392596658
Be Warned. Evil people. High postal prices, slow post and hopeless communication on top of CORRUPTED PRODUCTS

  44. jo3314 (ex-stevie73) now selling his fake 128gb sticks. On ebay, Items no. 140392596759 and 140392596758. BE WARNED, THESE ARE FAKES AND DO NOT REPLY ON EBAY ONCE THEY HAVE YOUR MONEY.

Just an update from my last post, the seller is no longer registered on eBay. I called them earlier, but the person could do nothing because I didn’t send the back, even after telling my reasons. So just because I felt like it, I appealed my case through the site. If that doesn’t work, then I have already contacted my bank about getting the money back that way. So I’ll update once I hear something.
