Report A Fake 2008-2010 (April)
The Fake flash memory wars are raging. Especially on eBay!
Please report your fake flash memory seller to us – see below for the information we need. We do not have all sellers of counterfeit and false capacity usb flash drives, mpx players and memory cards on file. Your contribution helps everyone.
Addresses of sellers from your mailing envelopes are very helpful. It helps us to spot fraud rings operating on eBay. Use the search box and type in your sellers id, if there is an article make sure to leave a comment and also your progress in dealing with him.
As of June 2009, SOSFakeFlash announced a zero tolerance policy. One confirmation can lead to an alert against an eBay seller. We need to reduce the number of victims, too many being frauded. Regards, From the Fake Flash Angels at SOSFakeFlash
- It is important you test your item to find it’s true capacity. Read: H2testw 1.4 – Gold Standard In Detecting USB Counterfeit Drives
- Do not assume if you have made a paypal claim and it has been closed that you can not reopen it. Many victims have been forced to do this.
- Do not leave positive feedback in exhange for a refund. You only make the problem worse. It is probably why you bought from the seller in the first place! Read: eBay Victims do not leave positive Feedback or change FB to positive to get refunds! Any seller who tries to make you do this is in violation of eBay rules.
Any company who had been involved directly or indirectly with a transaction involving fake flash memory items is liable and responsible – if they chose not to respond to the situation or take the warnings issued by customers seriously. To ignore the issue is to condone it.
- Reminder eBay see: EBay Ordered to Pay $61 Million in Sale of Counterfeit Goods
- Reminder PayPal: Steele Settlement Website
If you have confirmed that you have a fake (purchased from eBay) and you wanted it entered into the database as evidence so we can post an alert or update counts against a seller we will need the following information from you:
- eBay item number
- eBay Seller id
- Your eBay Buyer id (d0n’t forget this please)
- Your output from H2testw 1.4
- eBay item description title
- Seller address complete if you have it (mailing envelopes, eBay, PayPal). Important to build profile and track multiple id’s
- Seller email address
- A short word of you experience and or thoughts if you like (optional)
Reminder, your eBay Buyer id is NOT published on the internet when you report in to us. eBay fake flash memory seller ids are published on the internet to warn other buyers.
If your seller used private auction listings to hide the listing, or a multiple item buy now listing please send a screen capture of the listing to help us cut down on the investigation time.
To capture your buy now listing is very important if the seller is not on file with us (eBay Fake Memory Seller Lists) , if the seller is suspended you will lose your evidence and so could we.
Send this information directly to sosfakeflashdrive@gmail.com
We will not enter information into the database from a public site without 1-4.
If you are reporting several sellers (it happens) please keep the 1-8 pattern. Easy to understand, the more you save us time the faster we can investigate and enter.
There is no time limit in reporting a seller, you can find a lot of information inside of your paypal account for proof. We have had cases as old as 18 months from purchase being reported. It is why recording in a database is so important.
SOSFakeFlash is very strict about collecting information, data that can be supported and has witnesses to the fake flash memory deed. The alerts and posts we publish – are based on evidence.
The data used used to build the list of fake flash memory sellers on eBay. It is also used to issue summary reports on the problem. Data from victims helped us to produce this report: Global Report – eBay Fake Memory 2008 – 2009 , a two year effort. If anyone wants to dispute with us, we can send them an angry mob of fake flash victims. So if you would like to have your item(s) recorded for the record please send us the information above to: sosfakeflashdrive@gmail.com
It is important to report even if the seller is already on the list or an alert is issued.
It increases the counts and evidence against the seller and for the degree of fraud on eBay too. . We publish the sellers and the current counts in our eBay fake flash sellers list. We also produce statistics and reports from the information you send.
In your feedback please put the calling card of “SOSFakeFlash” + “H2testw“. It helps people to find us and get help. It also unnerves fraudsters as it means their days are now numbered. If you left positive feedback, do a follow up to your original feedback – to let everyone know what you discovered. This makes a difference too. If you have a little time, contact at least 5 other buyers from your fake flash seller to warn them to test. It’s a chain reaction, it helps others, reduces victims and soon brings these fraudulent sellers to the attention of both PayPal and eBay.

Sako why buy a drive if you knew it was fake, i suppose your curiosity got the better of you hoping that it was a genuine bargain. sorry it was not for you then lol

At luxurybabi Sorry if you thought we was takeing the piss out of you! It was only a bit of banter on here! Not directed at you! I was a victim of flash fraud and thats why I learnt how to spot them! I try to help other people spot them and try to stop as many people selling fakes on ebay as I have time for, If you do spot the man who sold you the fakes please do call the police and don’t do anything that would get you into trouble, And this site has good informatin that might help you get a conviction (If the guy is caught) I told people you refunded me on here so that they knew you were a ok seller! I also left you feedback on eBay saying you were a honest seller! Again sorry if our banter felt like we were taking the piss. Good luck with finding the guy 😉

LuxuryBabi, for your information, some people find the act of one person defrauding another to be an offensive action, and if the police and courts are unable or unwilling to get involved in prosecuting such fraud, then they get involved themselves. People invest their own time, effort and money in documenting and exposing these fraudulent sellers. It’s a public service.
Now, since the volunteer who brought you to attention seems to have accepted that you too are a victim rather than a fraudster, then I’m willing to accept that ; it’s quite plausible, and it seems that your actions have backed up your description of being defrauded yourself. So that’s all cool then.
Ask yourself – would you point out to the man next to you at the bar that his pint had been filled to well short of the line? It’s a minor fraud by the barman ; it might even be unintentinoal (but multiply it by several hundred pints a night … not so minor). Would you take action?
Try a bigger question – you know that one of your neighbours is both claiming the dole and working ; that’s potentially tens of thousands of pounds that s/he’s stealing from everyone around. Would you report him/her? It’s quite a lot of money they’re taking from the tax payer.
Try an even bigger question – you find that there’s an eBay seller selling cheap brake discs for your car, you get a set, and the first time you put them to the test in the rain they disintegrate. You came to a halt safely. But the next person? Would you take action. How would you feel if a friend or relative was killed by the out of control car?
The level of risk that these fraudulent copies represent is somewhere between the levels I’ve described. The hazards range from very annoying or emotionally upsetting data loss to potentially at least loss of important medical documentation. Some people here take that quite seriously ; I do. (And only partly because I killed a guy a few years ago by getting first-aid wrong ; you’d be surprised to know that I take first-aid training seriously too.)
It’s up to you to decide what you’re going to do about the fraudulent business that you got inadvertently caught up in. But it is a serious subject.
On a technical note … somewhere in your banter with Sako you’d said that you’d copied 60-odd GB of data onto the drives and they worked OK. That’s not the appropriate test – you need to test the quality of the data RESTORED from the USB stick. Copy a few movies from DVD onto the suspect stick, then copy them back to the hard drive in a different folder to where they came from ; see if you can play them. It’s a test worth doing for yourself (and it’s essentially what the H2testW program does (but doesn’t provide you with neat reports). If you feel brave, do the test with your family’s baby photos and wedding videos, after deleting the backups. Feels a bit different now?
Welcome to the light side, Luxe!

To Jim:
You must think we are all very ignorant. I apologise for not getting back earlier with some kind of response to the important issue you raised.
Getting the brand names to put warnings about counterfeits on their adverts is not likely to happen. They do not wish to use negatives when trying to promote a product. It would be even less of a consideration in the present economic climate.
Kingston at least have the online verification system to help buyers find out if drives are genuine. They also have listed authorised sellers.
I have seen it mentioned elsewhere that a change in the way the operating system communicates with the drive may be the way forward in detecting fakes. This is not likely to happen in the near future though and still means you have to buy first before finding out.
It seems the only real way forward is to go backwards. The brand names should be the sole sellers for their products with no middle men, just factory direct.
If I can order a fake from China and have it delivered through my door through ebay and paypal, then why not just buy a genuine drive direct from the manafacturer in China or wherever in the world they are based.
The postal system seems to work fine. There are various payment methods available. Online shopping is taking over.
It is possible to review and shop for nearly everything from the home pc and have it delivered to the door from anywhere in the world.
I do not save money by going to my local computer shop. The nearest proper one to me is 45 miles away and has limited range of goods and stock. I get a much better selection online, better prices and I can shop 24 hours a day.(I save the fuel and parking costs too!).
The less links in the chain, the better.
KittyFireFlash said
To Traveller et al.
Hmmm, that can mean many things. Most people fall into the fake flash trap by assuming they have cut a few of the links, and therefore the price. I, also a victim (got a jar full to remind my of my folly) thought that too.
The internet, eBay in particular is wonderful to find items that are hard to find. The post – it reaches the most rural and far away places. Not everyone is near a city. That was the good side of sites such as eBay. Unfortunately, there are those who have undermined the good and taken advantage of eBay’s weaknesses. It expanded too fast, it automated to the N-th degree and does not have enought human beings at the helm. They said this time last year they had 2,000 people who where employeed to fight fraud. It is obvious to all victims they don’t.
Cost cutting – the foolish mantra of our day. The ramifications and impact, well all of us are going to feel it for a long time to come.
Bottom line, you get what you pay for. There is a rock bottom price for things, go below and …I don’t have to say any more. We have all learned.
Yes the nature of nand flash technology is very diffeent. It can be vunerable….but it depends. It is not the flash chip, it is the usb controller chip.
The ability to reprogram devices depends on exploiting the controller chip. This is what we have learned so far. InspectorTech has not made a lot of updates to the fixfakeflash site.
Do you know why? No, not because he is working on other things for the Project. He doesn’t have to. The controller families for fakes are the same. The common chips exploited are in the same families. The fake flash sellers know exactly what chip sets they need to create fake flash.
The operating systems are not designed to expect or troll for false capacity. They never will. Instead they will continue to query the device and accept what the device reports. These days operating systems are bloated enough.
In the case of Brand Names, it is not only flash capacity. It is counterfeiting. Making the item “look” a lot like the real item. The more people pay, the better quality of fake. On ebay we see the poorest quality for Kingston fakes. Low genuine capacity, and if they are DT150 32GB or 64GB, they only look like the genuine item, to a degree. Most don’t even work from the start, cheap reject materials are used inside. Effort was on appearance, nothing more.
Consider This Everyone…
If eBay were to issue warnings at the site and even insert in the listings for flash based technology ie mp players, usb flash drives, memory cards – what would happen?
You would find almost nothing for sell on eBay. FACT!
Why? eBay sellers who sold genuine capacity items have told us they can’t make a profit. Given what the cost of the item is from an honest source, the fees that ebay and paypal will charge. So many have left ebay and in the end selling below cost just to liquidate their stock.
Question.
How many people would chose to buy these items on ebay if the price is only 10% lower than at a local retail outlet? Genuine capacity guaranteed.
I personally can only think that people in remote regions would.

Just to let everyone know I have completed refunds to everyone that purchased a flash drive from me.
I certainly have learnt now that being too cheap to refuse isnt always a good thing.
I will in the future steer clear of what seems to be an irresistable bargain.
Thanks for the advice Rockdoctor and yes i was gutted when i realised that i had been caught out by the conmen also.
Oh well thats 1 experience i will avoid in the the future.
Sako i do appreciate you offering to help me with the testing of the drive. but what did anger me was the ridicule over a genuine mistake.
Oh well thanks to everyone involved for alerting me of the mistake i was making, thank god i did not send them to the poor unsuspecting buyers that i sold them to.

If you have bought a drive from this seller, please test and send in your results to the email address given at https://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/report-a-fake/ Your input is welcomed and valued by the team here at sosfakeflash and fightflashfraud. The more evidence gathered on these sellers, the better. This is your chance to help fight against the injustice we all suffer as a result of this ongoing fraud.

Sorry for giving you a hard time. I forget myself sometimes, as fightflashfraud says, and get carried away with the banter.
For you to come here and publicly protest your innocence and offer your buyers a full refund says a lot for your character.
If you need any further help with this matter, please just ask. I would be glad to help.
It may seem very forward for me to ask, but your input on bringing to our attention the possibility of other sources such as Sunday markets has been an eye opener and it would be extremely useful to find out more about the market seller and his sources. It all helps to warn others and hopefully save others becoming unfortunate victims like your good self.
On the other hand, you may just prefer to give me a right roasting. I would not blame you if you did.
Once again, I apologise for any offence caused.

Update on nadiandian3. He has a paypal account as
Paypal wanted me to get professional evaluation of the unit within 10 days. I was on holiday when they sent the email and I did not get back until after the dead line.
I requested an extention and have just been told that they have closed the case in favor of the seller. They say taht I had failed in sending supporting evidence within the required 10 days, even though again I told them I was on holiday, did they expect me to fly back and get it evaluated. I also said that I can not send the unit in the post due to legality and the engineer also would refuse to do the same so it would take a bit of time to arrange and then arrange a convenient time for the evaluation as it takes over 8 hrs to test the 1mbs 32gb fake drive as it was not the 15Mbs as advertised.
Also he has unregestered from ebay so I cant give him bad feedback, and even told paypal this but I got the following:-
Thank you for contacting PayPal about your claim PP-726-607-481.
After viewing the above claim I can see that this claim has been closed in
the seller favour as you did not reply to PayPal requested for authenticity
documentation within the requested timeframe.
Thank you for using PayPal for your online payment needs.
Yours sincerely,
Arlene

No extention, no nothing so I have said I will get the money pulled from the credit card.
Obvuiously they cant get the money back and any payment to me would be out of there own pocket.
its £9.50 but it the principal

In response to Jaz4 comment about nadiandian3.
My recommendation would be to request a charge back from your credit card company. You may get a refund or not. The results depend on your countries regulations and the credit cards arrangements with Paypal. Also, if you do a reasonable amount of business with the credit card company they will be interested in retaining you as a client (unlike paypal). In some situations the credit card company may request the same documation that paypal requires that the item is “not a described”. There are some post on this blog about Barclay MasterCard and UK credit card chargeback policies.
In North America I have found MasterCard and Amex to side with their customers. Discussion with the customer service agents for these credit card companies indicated that it will be paypal problem to recover the funds from the fake seller and if they cannot that is paypal’s problem. That is the cost of doing business.

10251 MByte could be written.
Warning: Only 32735 of 32736 MByte tested.

The listing stated a lot of 10 thumb drives for sale but after I opted to buy one the listing dissapeared (so that I could not leave negative feedback).
Seller id is ‘ruyuyi20080808’ out of china.
Seller is either the victim of a wholesale fraud or very aware of the state of this listing.
Offered partial refund when I filed a claim through paypal, I’ll update as its still an open claim.

Hi Luxurybabi
Happy ending are nice.
As for the grilling, the team is committed to try and drag as many eBay sellers who might be victims away from this battle as they can.
Contrary to what some readers might think, we are not out to roast every eBay seller.
One of the first articles released at this site was:
The article was written long before you listed anything for sale, but I think it describes you perfectly, Luxurybabi.
You have demonstrated what an honest seller does on eBay, as difficult and painful as it might have been. You are not the first, nor the last (we hope).
To All Readers!
Not every eBay seller who has sold fake flash is a fraudster, some are just like you, stumbled into this terrible nightmare. You should have no difficultly in determining who is the shark and who is the victim. The sellers actions and behavior will reveal all.
There are many sellers who will never make it to the eBay fake flash sellers list. Why? Because when they are detected early enought it is possible for them to stop selling the fakes and refund buyers with haste. There are cases when a person reports in and when we investigate, we notice the seller does not fit the profile. Effort is made to dialogue with the seller and the victim(s) offline.
Unfortunately we can not reach all sellers in time and many ignore us (a 99.999% guarantee of fraud in the making confirmed too many times when data comes in against the seller). eBay messaging quota’s is also a serious obstacle.
Luxurybabi, I am not sure if you know the history behind the FrankenFlash Project. It was co-founded. By eBay victims and by eBay sellers of Fake Flash. Yes, eBay sellers of Fake Flash! Only with slight difference, they were victims and they just like you, refunded every single buyer and apologized.
It is important for readers to know this. The project was not founded only by victim buyers, but also victim sellers!
Luxurybabi your behavior is exactly the kind eBay really needs. It reminds us of a bygone era on eBay. The eBay we loved! The eBay we want back!
We will fight, we will rant, we will rave and we will do everything we can to help victims, rescue them and fight this fraud any and everyway we can.
We are also seeing what appears to be improvement on the part of eBay. We do not like seeing the listing information disappear from won pages when sellers are suspended, it makes it harder for victims to pursue their claims. There are reports of eBay actually helping victims to expidite their claims with PayPal. This is a positive sign and we would like to see them increase this assistence. PayPal, is real problem now for victims and too many are frauded a second time with paypal refusing to refund, even though they know very well that the seller claimed against has many reports against him.
The FrankenFlash Project will continue to monitor eBay’s behavior in addressing the issues. Let us hope they will continue in positive actions and join whole heartedly to purge eBay of these fraudulent sellers damaging it’s reputation. It’s a difficult challenge, we know that after 19 months of battle. We are aware that eBay is monitoring our sites, reading and learning (along with everyone else).
For eBay to take the time to single out and thank Luxurybabi for his honesty in addressing his situation, is exactly the kind of behavior needed. This kind of attention, made eBay in the first place, it can bring eBay back to it’s origins. Revive the spirit of what made it such a great place to shop….

Hi Juan,
Please make sure to report in using the https://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/report-a-fake/ tab. We can’t record you in the database or issue an alert against the seller without the information.
jojacsales sold in in multiple item auction listings. The packaging is all to familar for fakes. In fact any usb flash drive sold in this packaging is to be considered suspect!
Two 8GB for only $16 US? This is an impossible price for genuine capacity. Your results show a 1GB flash drive chip. It is also a very bad flash drive chip, defective with a lot of bad sectors – substandard – a factory reject.
The buyers of jojacsales need to be warned. People need to contact any buyers who left positive feedback to warn them to test! They risk data loss. This usb flash drive is not defective, it is a fake with false capacity, the usb controller chip has been digitally alerted.

Please report in Juan, so an alert can be issued to warn people.

This seller needs their head read. Despite advice and good information they have carried on with auctions for 256gb DT101’s and 256gb Corsair Flash Voyagers. They are intent at fraud despite the cost to others.
