Toward A Fake Flash Drive Free World – No More Counterfeits – No More Data Loss

Report A Fake

The Fake flash memory wars are raging. Especially on eBay! It is up to you to make a difference! The frauded buyer can have the last word!

Please report your fake flash memory seller to us. SOSFakeFlash has been fighting the issue since 2008.  Fraudulent sellers are stopped when buyers report.  SOSFakeFlash will investigate and publish a report on the seller.  This helps other victims who have been frauded, it helps them to stand up to the seller and to get their refunds.  When buyers do not report sellers, the sellers continue to sell and fraud even more people.

Seebelow for the information we need. We do not have all sellers of counterfeit and false capacity usb flash drives, mpx players and memory cards on file. Your contribution helps everyone. Your information is registered in our database. We publish and warn others.

Addresses of sellers from your mailing envelopes are very helpful. It helps us to spot conterfeit  fraud rings operating on eBay. Use the search box and type in your sellers id, if there is an article make sure to leave a comment and also your progress in dealing with him.  When we publish your report,  please use the ultimate weapon! Social media.  If you have a facebook account use it to reference an article to warn your friends.  It is the most important way you can contribute and save others from your horrible experience.

As of June 2009, SOSFakeFlash announced a zero tolerance policy.

One confirmation can lead to an alert against an eBay seller. There was no choice considering the number of sellers involved with fake flash memory selling.  Investigators for SOSFakeFlash and the FrankenFlash project are highly trained to spot sellers. There is more than sufficient information on the internet for would be eBay sellers to exercise due diligence.  eBay makes it a policy to insert into each eBay listing that a seller is solely responsible for what they list.

SOSFakeFlash will make no exceptions, regardless of eBay country of registration. Any alert published at SOSFakeFlash will not be removed, whether or not an eBay seller chooses to refund some buyers.  Posturing and threats by eBay sellers are useless, in fact it usually leads to the eBay seller being investigated by eBay and being suspended.  We deal in facts, period.  You help in providing the facts.

Any attempt to claim “defective” will not be be received kindly, genuine flash memory storage chips are manufactured to the highest standards to ensure they can retain capacity, it is one of the reasons true flash memory is expensive.  SOSFakeFlash shows no favoritism.  An eBay seller in the Western world will receive the same treatment as one registered in an Asian country. If a brand name item is in question, an eBay seller must furnish proof from the brand name, attesting to the fact the items they sold were not counterfeit or false capacity.  We expect the brand name to exonerate the seller by testifying the items were indeed “defective”.  We do not expect to receive many emails from the brand name companies as most eBay seller caught did not buy directly from the brand name, nor an authorized reseller, most bought their inventory from Asian wholesaler sites and therefore are at risk of being frauded.  You the eBay buyer, are not responsible for their poor lack of judgment. Your duty is to report the seller, to reduce the fraud for your fellow eBay members.  It is the only way to reduce the fraud and scam eBay continues to permit.  Should you feel sorry for the seller, you do a disservice to other eBay victims, you will contribute the the problem.

To anyone who feels a zero tolerance policy is harsh, we invite you to begin your research and to assess how much money is involved, how much profit and just how many people have lost data and files during the past 9 years on eBay.

We are nearing the end of 2011 and while sellers are being suspended, eBay continues to evade responsibility,  despite the fact the issue is over 9 years old.  Progress is being made, but only when buyers report.  This is where you can matter.  You would be very surprised how a single eBay member was able to stop a seller or even reduce the number of victims.    It is all about making a small indivual effort. That little effort can have very sharp teeth.

  • It is important you test your item to find it’s true capacity. Read: H2testw 1.4 – Gold Standard In Detecting USB Counterfeit Drives
  • Do not assume if you have made a paypal claim and it has been closed that you can not reopen it. Many victims have been forced to do this.  If you funded with a credit card, take a short cut.  After reporting to SOSFakeFlash, contact your credit card company and ask them to do a reversal for fraud.  Credit cards are more concerned about your welfare then eBay ever will be.  You are more likely to get your refund.  It is not something eBay will like and you can be assured that eBay will reclaim their loss by removing the sale from the seller via PayPal. After 3 years of operation and experience we can tell you, the secret to getting your money back is to disregard any eBay claim windows or time limits.  People who are persistent succeed.
  • Do not leave positive feedback in exhange for a refund. You only make the problem worse. Under no circumstances should you fall for blackmail – revise your feedback to optain a refund.   Sellers will try to do this to you.  It is up to you to decide if you are a mouse or if you are someone who will not tolerate fraud.  The revision of feedack is probably why you bought from the seller in the first place! Read: eBay Victims do not leave positive Feedback or change FB to positive to get refunds! Any seller who tries to make you do this is in violation of eBay rules. You can report them!  Send all emails to eBay as your proof – demand your refund and do not accept excuses or email robots.

Any company who had been involved directly or indirectly with a transaction involving fake flash memory items is liable andresponsible. There are no “buts” or “maybe”s. Do not belive any seller ploy of “defective or faulty”, this is the oldest scam in selling fake flash memory!  If you fall for it, you allow more victims for your seller.

It is important you become a registered victim of the eBay flash memory fraud:

If you have confirmed that you have a fake (purchased from eBay) and you wanted it entered into the database as evidence so we can post an alert or update counts against a seller we will need the following information from you:

  1. eBay item number
  2. eBay Seller id
  3. Your eBay Buyer id (d0n’t forget this please)
  4. Your output from H2testw 1.4 or F3 by Michel Machado For Linux
  5. eBay item description title
  6. Seller address complete if you have it (mailing envelopes, eBay, PayPal). Important to build profile and track multiple id’s
  7. Seller email address
  8. A short word of you experience and or thoughts if you like (optional)

Reminder, your eBay Buyer id is NOT  published on the internet when you report in to us. eBay fake flash memory seller ids are published on the internet to warn other buyers.  Keeping your identity confidential is important. It allows us to fight fraudulent sellers aggressively.

If your seller used private auction listings to hide the listing, or a multiple item buy now listing please send a screen capture of the listing to help us cut down on the investigation time.

To capture your buy now listing is very important if the seller is not on file with us (eBay Fake Memory Seller Lists) , if the seller is suspended you will lose your evidence and so could we.

Send this information directly to sosfakeflashdrive@gmail.com

We will not enter information into the database from a public site without 1-4.

After reporting in to us, please visit the updated Fight Back Page! See how you can make a difference. A lot of people find it very rewarding – even “therapeutic”. Yes, sometimes one needs a little therapy from the fake flash memory experience. A lot of people feel helpless against eBay and powersellers, nothing is further from the truth. This site is the result of people who helped out, they knew you would be coming here someday….

If you are reporting several sellers (it happens) please keep the 1-8 pattern. Easy to understand, the more you save us time the faster we can investigate and enter.

If you do not provide us with the minimun 1-4 we will not investigate nor respond to you.  If you are a genuine buyer it is easy for you to provide the information.

There is no time limit in reporting a seller, you can find a lot of information inside of your paypal account for proof. We have had cases as old as 18 months from purchase being reported. It is why recording in a database is so important.

SOSFakeFlash is very strict about collecting information, data can be support, has witnesses to the fake flash memory deed. The alerts and posts we publish – are based on evidence. Not one post has ever been removed since 2008, despite threats or posturing, can you guess why?

The data we collect is  used to build the list of fake flash memory sellers on eBay. It is also used to issue summary reports on the problem. Data from victims helped us to produce this report: Global Report – eBay Fake Memory 2008 – 2009 , a two year effort. If anyone wants to dispute with us, we can send them an angry mob of fake flash victims. So if you would like to have your item(s) recorded for the record please send us the information above to: sosfakeflashdrive@gmail.com

It is important to report even if the seller is already on the list or an alert is issued.

It increases the counts and evidence against the seller and for the degree of fraud on eBay too. . We publish the sellers and the current counts in our eBay fake flash sellers list. We also produce statistics and reports from the information you send.

In your feedback please put the calling card of “SOSFakeFlash” + “H2testw“. It helps people to find us and get help. It unnerves fraudulent sellers as it means their days are now numbered. If you left positive feedback, do a follow up to your original feedback – to let everyone know what you discovered. You would be suprised just how much this can help.  If you have a little time, contact at least 5 other buyers from your fake flash seller to warn them to test. It’s a chain reaction, it helps others, reduces victims and soon brings these fraudulent sellers to the attention of both PayPal and eBay.

Unfortunately that Aldi store as well as another 50Klm away are both still selling these faked units as of today.

One week after notifying the Forster store, giving them a copy of the testing results & then phoning & reporting this to their St Marys Distribution Centre, multiple Aldi stores are still selling faulty Fission Brand fake 1GB flash drives described as “8GB”
All data saved to these units is likely to be lost!

Out of curiosity & to confirm my earlier findings I purchased & tested 2 more units, this time from the Taree store. They produced these identical results:

    Grump,

Can you take some photographs of the flash drives? The packaging too? If Aldi is not listening then something has to be done. They were very fair at the FakeFlashNews site, gave Aldi a chance an opportunity to clean up their mess.

They have been known to offer good prices especially to many of us who do not have fat wallets or a lot of money to spend. Perhaps they feel they are too big to be touched? Untouchable? Able to do as they please?

This is not a case of sour milk, at least you can smell it is bad.

You can’t smell a fake flash drive, you have to test it for capacity as you have done.

I think a lot of people would prefer a stomach ache to losing their data and files.

Can you send info on Taree too?

You know where to send the info.

Do the 4 flash drives look the same? If so then it could be the same supplier unloading them in Australia. If this is so, then there is a need to warn Australians about these 8GB fakes. They contain a very poor quality 1 GB flash storage chip. To hunt them down and have them removed we need to know what they look like.

  5. Grump3 said

Unfortunately I returned the 4 fakes for a refund (2 @ both stores).

However I’ll be driving into Town today so if I find them still on sale I’ll purchase, test & take a photo to send in.

  6. KittyFireFlash said

    @Grump,

Please do. It might be an expense for you, but it will help consumers in Australia. If you sent in the info we will do some special articles at the FrankenFlash Project sites.

Then we will unleash the “hornets”.

If you have a cell phone with a camera or a friend who has, aim it at the displays while pretending to take a call.

Cell phone pictures can shake the world – Globally! And often in only a few minutes. It is the new way to fight against injustice and it is VERY POWERFUL!

People are trying to avoid fraud by buying the lower capacity flash drives ie 8 GB. It is very unfair that Australians are suffering, not realizing they are buying 1GB flash drives instead of 8GB and from retailers they TRUSTED!

    Hi KittyFireFlash,

Have done as you requested & emailed the test results along with 2 Photos (front & back).

I’ve now purchased a total of 5 “8GB Fission USB Sticks” from 2 Aldi stores in my district.
All have been found to be under 1 GB via H2Testw.
One week after buying & returning the first 2 to the Forster store, giving them a written report & phoning their distribution centre I returned to see them still on sale.

I then purchased 2 more at the Taree Aldi store & after testing them also left Aldi a full report & copy of the results.
I was later informed my report had been sent on to the area Manager when I returned 4 days later to see them still on sale & then purchased a 5th one to test & photoghraph to send on to you.

If anyone can help, it would be mostly appreciated.

Two of them are branded A-data, one state a capacity of 32GB, and the other 8GB (even though I bought it as a 32GB…go figure). VID PID: 145F 011A
The other is branded Memorette and state a capacity of 32GB. This one doesn’t appear anymore in Windows, it seems dead. VID PID: 0B38 0003

    Item number: 160638664865
Item location: Adelaide South Australia, AU, Australia
    Member id: sshteff

==THIS IS WHAT THE SELLER WRITES IN THE DESCRIPTION
Genuine 512gb USB Flash Drive BRAND NEW & TESTED

I have personally tested these drives and can confirm the drive size is legitimate (499gb available after format).

    If the drive doesn’t function when it arrives as I describe here OR the capacity is less than stated I will provide FULL REFUND + YOUR POSTAGE COST back to me (This does not apply to buyers outside Australia). Before sending I will;

-Error check the device using purpose designed software
    -Confirm Read/Write Speed -Confirm Capacity
-Ensure drive is formatted & ready to use as soon as received
-ExFAT format (NTFS if requested by buyer)

These are quality drives made using quality components (controllers & 1,000,000 cycle NAND memory). The shell is solid & made from metal. If you would like multiple items I am happy to provide a volume discount to save time.

*For your information- Through work we required 5,000+ USB drives made with our logo & custom security features (software). Of the drives ordered the failure/fault rate was less than 1 in 200. We had the faulty drives replaced with ‘generic’ or already branded devices. Identical internally to what we had previously ordered.

PLEASE SEE PICTURES BELOW FOR BENCHMARK & PERFORMANCE RESULTS.
THESE RESULTS ARE FROM ACTUAL DRIVE BEING SOLD IN THIS AUCTION

    “Hello.

Have you tested those pendrives using the “H2testw 1.4 – Gold Standard In Detecting USB Counterfeit Drives” ? If not I suggest you do so… then, you’ll find out the real capacity and how much fake those pendrives are.

After the test is done, write down the test results on the item’s description the same way you put those printscreen testing results.

BEWARE OF FRAUD FOR FAKE PENDRIVES/SDHC MEMORY CARDS ON EBAY!!!!”

Grump3, The seller is still being defensive. He asked me if I was the “ebay police” and now says “The ACTUAL USABLE VOLUME will be around 160gb from the tests using H2TESTW.”

Interesting. I’d like to see his H2TESTW printout, lol.
He replied to my Ebay contact with the following:

“I shared your opinion. I though HDD Tune Pro was a good program to use. Ran the tests as seen in the attached images. I will use “H2TESTW” also. If I am wrong or I mislead I will refund the full cost $10 towards your shipping cost back to me. In the meantime I’ll take your advice and scan it using your suggested software.

    UPDATE

The title of this listing is INCORRECT “Genuine 512gb USB Flash Drive BRAND NEW & TESTED”.
It is not a Genuine 512gb USB Flash Drive. It is brand new and tested. . . .

eBay users have contacted mesuggested using H2TESTW to test the drive.

I will not provide the selling price +postage cost as a refund if the drive does not perform as listed above. All original tests are valid however do not adequately test the usable volume of the drive. I will provide my regular refund (buyer to cover shipping).

The ACTUAL USABLE VOLUME will be around 160gb from the tests using H2TESTW.

ANY bid prior to 19/8/2011 will be reversed on request.

    More to come..

    @Troy & Grump3,

eBay seller sshteff is smoking something but it is not tobacco!

    The item: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-512gb-USB-Flash-Drive-BRAND-NEW-TESTED-/160638664865?pt=AU_USB_Flash_Drives&hash=item2566cf80a1

photo clearly shows SONY embossed on the metal flash drive. We are unaware of Sony producing a 512GB flash drive. In fact we are unaware of any brand name offering a 512GB flash drive to the general consumer public!

sshteff does not know how to read the results from H2TESTW. 160gb is usable?

H2TESTW. showed a lock up., it died trying to write to the drive. This is happening more frequently, we think the reprogrammers are going beyond what their “altering software can handle.

sshteff would be better off, disassembling one of the 512GB flash drives and showing the usb controller chip and flash memory storage chip for his buyers so they can easily search the internet to decode the real size.

You both need to know that Australia is really suffering from fake flash memory on eBay, BADLY!

    1) eBay members registered in Australia suffering in larger numbers from fraud for false capacity flash memory.

    2) eBay seller ids registered in Australia, who sell fake memory are increasing. Sellers in Asia are opening a lot of new ids there as there is too much negative press about ids registered in China, Hong Kong or even Singapore. They are rerouting, Australia is the target.

If you search on “sshteff ” you will find something weird, the same id is on iOffer.

Is sshteff playing games? Hard to say.

What is clear is that nobody offers 512GB in a usb flash drive and Sony certainly does not have any usb flash drives at that capacity.

The ignorance or stupidity of eBay sellers, continues to harm eBay buyers.

eBay continues to grab listing fees and demonstrates an amazing appetite for profit and greed.

It’s easy for eBay to put an end to the fraud. A victim was able to see how it could be done:

Can eBay Stop The Sale Of Fake And Counterfeit Memory? A Frauded Buyers Simple Insight To Solving The Problem For Fraudulent eBay Listings.

but as we all know, eBay has only one objective, to reach into your pockets, pretend to offer you protection against fraud and laugh all the way to the bank.

As for brand names being ripped off, as Sony is in this listing, eBay does not care.

As a result of outsourcing and manufacturing in China, where there is little emphasis on maintaining security protocols all major brands of flash memory items have been comprimised. Their products and brand names are counterfeited on an industrial scale. Try the law courts in China, wait for the next millenium.

The only action is to continue to pressure by raising awareness. To expose eBay and also the sellers involved.

Please patrol eBay Australia and reach out to buyers to warn them.

  29. Grump3 said

    Quoted from his listing:
“This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available”

—-This is an email that I got from misternouk. Misternouk is currently selling multiple “512GB” flash drives on ebay.

It is true that I’m not sure this flash drive is genuine. Yet, I do not believe that it is fake because I have been using one myself for awhile. Due to its high capacity, it has actually become the primary storage device for all my business and personal files. I cannot complain about its quality. So, if it it not genuine, then just because something is not genuine does not mean it has no quality. Just because such high capacity USB has not yet been officially or publicly put on the market by a brand industry does not mean it cannot appear on the market.
I have got my hands on this USB and was curious about how much it could serve someone who manage large and multiple files like me. I try it. I have used over 200 GB of the 499 GB space available already. It works, and I just wanted other people curious like me to try it as well. Indeed, I even recommend anyone who would buy this item from me to return it for a full refund if they were not satisfied by its quality.
I really appreciate your commitment to protect Americans. But, I don’t think there is a crime to try new interesting things that anyone would love to have. Even though you don’t believe that such capacity exist and could be real, can you imagine all the time you could save by storing your data on a 512 GB USB?
In fact, this listing is on a worldwide view, so anyone around the world who is not afraid to try things could buy from me. I am more concern about people’s safety in doing business in a fair way. I’d rather consider stopping this sale if you bought the item from me, and based on your experience, you explain in detail any problem that you have found with its quality. That is, I will not keep selling this item, If I receive complaints from the buyers themselves.
With all respects, feel free to attack me or do anything against me, if it please you to do so.
If you have any other question, concern, and suggestion to make, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

    Best Regards,
    – misternouk

Going by my past experiences after claiming through Paypal you then have just 10 days to supply independent, 3rd party proof the item is fake to Paypal who then may decide to either a full or partial refund IF the funds are available from the sellers account.
I dumped Paypal after they rejected my claim on a DOA item. I found it easier to do a chargeback on my credit card rather than continue fighting Paypal & their so called “Buyer Protection.”

    a) There will be no Import duties, taxes and charges for all the countries. We will declare as gift with low values.
    * Serious Buyer Only! Please place bid or “Buy it now” only if you agree the price and terms of the product and no argument after the auction en”

After my purchase I did some more shopping around for SDHC sticks and found that many ebay/Singapore auctions, of which these sellers have 6-8 positive feedback and all of their feedback is for Nokia batteries and such.. appear to be the same gang.

I went and reported them to ebay…Every single one of the “gang” lol that posted … “There will be no import duties, taxes and charges to all countries. We will declare as gift with low values.” It’s the least we can do. REPORT THEM! That line violates ebay terms of service. Ebay will pull their auctions for that alone.

Even buying an item in-store isn’t a guarantee that you get what you pay for. Back in April this year, an unknown shopper bought what appeared to be a Samsung 500GB external drive in China. When it didn’t work the way it should, he took it to a repair shop in Russia, to have the technicians bust it open, then burst out
laughing. Inside was a single 125MB flash drive looping to overwrite previous files when it ran out of space.

Also check out this flash drive:
    http://www.zdnet.com.au/the-best-of-the-worst-fakes-and-scams_p3-339321888.htm

But at least some effort was put into that last one. Look at what some poor chap got in China back in 2007, thinking he was paying for several jiggabits of thumb drive.

This needs to come to an end. Every ebay user which has witnessed a fake drive for themselves must report this to ebay and not only to feedback. I cannot believe the positive feedback posts on fake drives!

Again, the very least we can do to slow fake drive purchases is by reporting auctions which state, "NO DUTY will be charged and will send as low value, or a gift." This is fraud in itself. Against the law!

I forwarded some information to the federal dept at Kingston Technologies. Whether they do anything about it is not their responsibility.

We expect to reach over 2000 eBay seller id’s involved in fake memory selling before 2012. It is difficult to belive, but unfortunately true.

We agree that the most important thing for a victim is to leave immediate negative feedback. In fact, from the statistics, it is the most powerful weapon to remove an eBay seller id. eBay continues to remove sellers the moment negative feedback appears. Sadly, they do not warn buyers nor do they issue an immediate refund to the member. This continues to prove eBay’s complicity and involvment in fraud.

It is no longer thousands of eBay members who have been scammed, but current estimates is reaching approximately over 1 milliion. if you consider 9 years of listings for fake flash memory products on eBay.

The foolishness and naivity of eBay buyers continue to be the main reason why eBay is permitted to continue to assist in the scam. At issue is only one thing – MONEY. Fees.

Many victims trust. This is the biggest mistake they can make. In believing “Buyer Protection” actually exists, they engage in the email robotic nonsense. The end result is their 45 day claim window is exhausted. eBay then tells them, sorry but time ran out. The buyer loses their money, the buyer loses their data and files. It is a very sick business.

We have only one message for people who find our site:Fight back or accept the loss of your money and data files. If you believe it is wrong to scam, to sell fake flash memory, wrong advertised capacity, it is your obligation, your duty to stand up and say NO!

It is very foolish to assume that somebody else is going to do your job. You can not expect that the members of SOSFakeFlash will do your work. We assist, we investigate, we expose the sellers involved. We enable you with the truth and the facts. We are unable to contact the buyers for your seller as there are just too many of them. You can. You can warn others who left positive feedback and warn them to test! Much depends on how you feel about becoming a victim. Much depends on whether you care about other buyers for the same seller.

As we have mentioned many times….

How you chose to deal with the issue, tells you much about yourself as a person and your character.

SOSFakeFlash is happy to hear Seth, that your team is happy and working on the issue of warning people about new sellers. It goes on and on and on…..

Some people are shy about active involvement. Our message to them? Use their facebook accounts to warn their friends by posting one of our posts. Create awareness!

Nobody should buy a flash memory card, mp player or usb flash drive on eBay. Boycotte. Send eBay a message. Vote by exposing them. Save others from your nightmare and experience.
