Many people have lost money, some a lot. But….
It does not matter what price paid for the drive – who can put a price on data copied to it? Documents. Photos. Memories? If the source data has been deleted – these files are gone forever. The loss will mean different things to different people.
We are unable to reveal exactly what the data loss can mean or where it has occurred. A lot has to remain confidential. People’s jobs are at stake. Some could face court martials. There is no reason to make people victims a second time – the experience was traumatic enough.
It is frightening to learn just who has been a victim of counterfeit flash drives. Causal users to the most savvy about technology, together they tumble in the fake flash pit. Quiet a few have been rescued by the fake flash angels. No, we can’t elaborate on what that means – only almost all are victims of fake flash drives. It is not just buyers of fake flash on the warpath, sellers are too. Both are working together. Why? If you are a victim of Fake Flash it would be easy understand. If you have not been a victim, think of how you would feel if someone took a hammer to your hard disk or shredded or snapped all your data cd’s, dvds and old floppies – how would you feel about the loss?

Hi Jamie,
The most important thing is that you tested with H2testw. If you did, please put that in your listing. You have tested with H2testw and certify with a guarantee of 16GB. Make sure you also mention that formatted it will be a bit smaller, in formatting there is an overhead for the FAT (file allocation table). It is normal.
Do not show a screen capture of what the operating system shows, operating systems are fooled by fakes.
Your best option is to certify that you tested and that you stand behind the advertised capacity.

Well, my husband just got ripped off on a fake Sandisk 32GB MicroSD Card. We are getting our money back. But to do so we have to send the card back to the seller. Even with documentation from SanDisk!!! Even though Ebay admits its a fake!!!
so I’ve taken it upon myself to email everyone else that has bought from this guy. So far only one has replied back and his is bogus too.

where is the best place to report a real retailer selling fake flash and not just an ebay retailer as I believe I may have reported in wrong section of this site, tried alerting retailer to the problem who referred me to the supplier who denied fake and said mine must be faulty, I want to know best way to expose this to help unsuspecting victims

May sure to research your “Title”, Keywords. Keywords are important for search engines such as Google.
They have been contacted and are willing to publish a story for you. Have a look at the site, and the features.
The story of retailer pointing to supplier who then says…no such thing as a fake is not unusual. It is the old story of what we call in North America – “Passing the Buck”.

Dylan, so many victims of fake flash memory cool, it is a sad but important fact. If you still feel strongly, then use your creativity and become an author. Write up your story and send it in to the email address above. You can also include images. We’ve spoken to them and you story will get 1st priority.
The fakeflashnews site is probably the best place to get the internet exposure. Make sure the retailer and country are in the title. You can do a follow up later by visiting sites in your country and posting the url address to the article they publish.
It is probably the best way you can help unsuspecting victims.
Last but not least, Dylan, thank you for caring about others. You earn the title “Citizen of the World”! Welt Mensch, a title my great uncle gave me as youngster, wear it proudly. It is one of the most noble titles a person can have.
He lived BTW to be 100 and three days. A citizen of a great country that fell into disrupt, he had ideals that changed over time as he learned about human nature.

Don’t forget promotional flash drives. I’ve been given two different ones that turned out to be fake as well. If some company or institution gives you a flash drive, copy the contents (if any) to someplace else, then test it rigorously too.

Trying to source a good reliable manufacturer from China… for USB drives.
After asking for ONLY grade A products from 4 manufacturers… two lots have tested ok, and two just completely off the mark.. well in my eyes, but the manufacture has other ideas that just have completely thrown me…

Based on the high percentage of drives that failed H2testw testing and the nonsensical response (location of chip on wafer does not affect chip capacity) from the supplier I would recommend that you not purchase anything from that supplier.
Based on that fact a large number the usb drives failed H2Testw it would be reasonable to assume the following
-the memory chips are of inferior quality
-the manufacture of the usb drives does not check the chips for errors (specifically bad blocks).
-the firmware may also be of inferior quality – bad blocks should be detected and not reused.
There is no truth in what they are saying. High quality chips do not exhibit the type of errors you have seen and or the range of effective sizes. The effective sizes should be in a small range not the large range you have seen.

he source is playing technobabble nonsense. Buyers need to stay away from suppliers who try to explain capacity differences based on the wafers. You don’t get the discepancies or fluctuations in size described by this supplier as QC would lead to discards and rejects.
One of the reasons for the cost, is the quality control process. It is to ensure that all chips deliver the capacity, if they don’t they get discarded.

I got one Kingston 256GB Data Traveler 200 Flash Drive. It did not perform as expected. Probably a fake.
I downloaded H2testw 1.4 and used to test he Flash Drive. It did prove that the Flash Drive was FAKE but it also did something totally unexpected – The software H2testw 1.4 created a directory VIRTUAL ROOT and Created two virtual drives and it wrote one of the virtual drives with 1MB files thus taking all the space on drive C: in total 155 GB. C dive reported no space.
Is it normal for H2testw 1.4 to do this ?
Can some one explain this behavior of H2testw 1.4 to me and how to avoid this in future.

The version of H2Testw 1.4 that is recommend by this site does not behave as you indicated in your post.
I suspect there are other programs available for download with the same name but perform differently, and could possibly host a virus or other malware.

Hello all at sosfakeflash, James Blunt here. I wrote yesterday about my near miss with a rogue seller who sold us a dodgy Sony Vaio, At the time we thought that Sony & Vaio go hand in hand but it was a surprise for me. On buying it my wife decided to look up what the cost would have been to purchase it from a retailer like Pc-world but a lot of warnings about fakes flooding the market & you were one of the sites in the list. He was all to keen to reimburse the cost & initial posting, not the return postage, – Shame on him. He as good as said that when refunded leave feedback to say that all was sorted (with the refund). The answers given were words spelt incorrectly with what looked like broken English. Well, following this it was time to leave a negative, which we did, only we weren’t expecting threats to not only our Ebay account, but 300 members or associates all over the UK who would buy from us & purposely leave negatives with misleading negative/positives. The following day my wife sold a board game under a name we hadn’t dealt with before. As soon as my wife sells anything she always checks where it is being posted to pack & label. Guess what, same address, different account name. Eventually after being on the phone for over an hour, things got sorted. Initially Ebay told us not to send the item. We found out of Ebay that his household have multiple accounts writing false feedback for one another & practising SHILLBIDDING – this term is used when a bidder is pushing up the bids with other accounts in the same household, It was only by comparing feedback & delivery details my wife discovered that this was the case. They told us that they would deal with the payment return etc, – they didn’t & then a case was opened for non delivery by the fraudulent buyer, we refunded them but that case will show on our account – I am somewhat annoyed as they can’t or won’t remove it.
This situation has made us to be more aware that there are many many con artists out there ready & willing to rip customers of whether in a Ebay shop or Ebay private account. I just hope that someone reading this will be made aware of the foul sellers around. Had we not been put in this situation then there we probably wouldn’t have even checked online & as my wife said to me, you see Sony, you trust Sony, would I have checked & to be quite honest I wouldn’t have. Many buyers out there will use it for a few pictures, documents & even a Divx movie & won’t know possibly for months that they were duped. We got a real mini flash drive from PC-world & it was £38 & a true flash drive by LEXER with 32GIG of space. I have filled it with 30+ Divx movies along with 2GB of pictures & 4 albums & still have some free space.
I urge anyone out there to test their drive if they have recently bought one no matter where they got it from, with files up to the apparent capacity, Make sure you copy not cut & paste because if you delete following the paste & your files on the drive are corrupted you will lose them forever. I back up every week to DVD & monthly to an external HDD. One hour of time is nothing if a fake has been sold on & been found out. I view portable storage in a different way following our unpleasant episode.
Today I have scrolled through many items on Ebay quoting high storage USB pen drives & have reported every day the same items that I know are too good to be true for 4 days now but they are still there being sold to unsuspecting customers. I am appalled that Ebay are taking no notice of these USB’s that are obviously fakes. The ones that are definately fake are Sony Vaio USB pen drives with 512GB of space selling for around £100 but there are many others that are fake but I haven’t got the time to find & report all of them & I am unsure whether the one I think are fake are actually fake. I hope someone reads this article & if only 1 person benefits then it has been worth it.

Some might think we HATE eBay – nothing could be further from the truth. Many of us are old eBay members, we remember what eBay used to be like. What we HATE is what has happened to eBay.
They forgot who made them, why people chose to buy on their site. They have sold their soul in the interest of profit and fees. They chose to squeeze the bottom line, introduce technology that has escaped their ability to control or understand – introducing mindless email template robots, it is important for people to understand that when they might be fortuante or unfortunate enough to receive a communication from eBay, the signed name is an alias. Is it a real person? Doubtful. It is probably whoever is sitting in front of the terminal receiving information in their daily queue.
Threats are not uncommon James.
Sellers tend to use them a lot. They even file unpaid item disputes against eBay members who have received refunds. They have tried it countless times with this site and the other ones in the FrankenFlash Project. The fact that not one article published has ever been retracted – speaks about the truth.

Where are these mysterious 2,000 people? A little known fact is that since 2008, eBay has been busy down sizing – that includes people who were supposed to fight the fraud. It is an ugly truth few people know. As each day passes, they rely more and more on robotic templates and call center workers in countries where the daily wage would shock most peoples sensibilities.
If only people could wake up and learn they are not communicating with people on eBay but computer programmes with almost zero intelligence.
Does eBay actually have an IT staff? We doubt it. If they do, it is probably a skeleton crew that interacts with out sourcing companies. Probably the cheapest and the lowest on the IQ scale.

Well, where to start on my opinions of scammers on not just EBay or Amazon, or even your regular high street store – who knows? When we started being on the Internet, in 2008, we were probably naive in respect of how low some people would sink to try & make a quick £1 or two. One of our first sales was a DVD player that was as good as new. We sold it because we had upgraded to a DVD-RW. We sent it & then the bid was retracted but as we paid via Paypal we got the money back. That was our 1st meeting with what can only be described as fraud.
The thing that is upsetting me the most is the fact that people are buying fake items worldwide in all categories whether it be clothes, perfume, DVDs or anything including the USB pen drives, the discussion on this site. A lot of people are happy to get their money back & say nothing because they have been refunded & leave a positive which really should be a negative. Many probably thousands of customers worldwide will unwittingly buy & then use for many months, then face a corruption problem once the true size of the card or USB is reached. By then they most likely will say that it is just one of those things that happen to computer hardware now & then & then buy a new one – hopefully from a trusted store with some legal form of guarantee. If only the conned could be easily contacted to warn them about what is a growing scam, the purpose of this site.
Yesterday, 20th October 2011 I did my usual search for any 512GB pen drives & 3 came up for the Kingston 310 they are items numbers 260876699271, 260876699638, 260876700098. The seller is king3135 & he/she put these on last week, they were removed & now back on with a £5 start. I notice they were on a short 3 day listing – I wonder why? I have reported them but it seems that no one is looking who can remove them. I hope that all who are conned become wise to them & tell friends & friends of friends to at least go part way to fighting against such sellers. Good luck to all. James

The number of sellers involved increases daily. In the past it was easier to deal with as we fought against powerseller ids.
As we exposed them, they changed tatics. Instead they open new ids with low feedback scores, frequenty several id’s at the same time.
It has become very nasty and the id’s as the Spookie team often says:

We need as many people as possible to spot fraudulent sellers and to report them in comments. It remains the best weapon and is fast.

Thanks for the positivity regarding the fake flash drives even though I have only played a small part for trying to reduce the fake USB’s on Ebay. Although I haven’t searched yet today there are some items on that I would consider to be fake items. So below are the items I found last night.

I have reported all of the above items & two extra items that were on have been pulled – they were 516gb models so I have faith that Ebay are policing the situation. The items that have been removed were probably removed because of many people reporting so I feel as a change is being made regarding these supposedly high capacity drives. Keep up the good work & I will be checking via search for 256gb & 512gb USB as I think that consumers should be protected. James
