Why does eBay not protect you against flash memory fraud from China? Have you ever wondered why? In 2009 SOSFakeFlash explained why eBay does not protect buyers:
If you read this article you will understand why there is such a long history of flash memory fraud on eBay specifically from eBay sellers in China.
Four years later there is a new twist. Many frauded buyers on eBay fought back against Chinese fake flash memory sellers. Powerseller id’s fell, one by one thanks to an aggressive effort by eBay members. There were two groups of people:
Those who contacted other buyers and warned them to test – FakeFlashMemory angels.
Those who decided to behave like the sellers, they used very unorthodox methods, aggressive and not clean – FakeFlashCommandos.
The two groups were very different in ideology in how to fight the issue. It caused a division in the FrankenFlash project. Those who believed in following “process” and those who did not.
One site was horrified SOSFakeFlash might publish exactly how flash memory chips could be altered, they actually thought it would lead people in Western countries to do it. What they did not take into consideration was the time and effort involved in the alternation. Why bother when you can import from a Chinese wholesale site so much cheaper, no personal effort involved? Why risk using the wrong tools and destroying inventory? Will we publish how it is done? Yes, eventually we will. Fact is, it is one of the important exercises technical team members are required to perform as proof of their knowledge and understanding of manipulating flash chip storage technology.
SOSFakeFlash does not have a mandate to police people’s thoughts or actions. We only report what we know and have investigated. It is up to each reader to decide how to react or respond. How you respond will probably tell you a lot about yourself. It can be very revealing.
Some people read, then fight for a refund and disappear.
Some report the seller to eBay and then file for refund.
Some examine the seller’s history, realize they have to be clever and sneaky. Especially when nobody left negative feedback, they play along, get their refund, leave positive, then stab the seller in the back. How? By sending us full documentation on the seller, even home addresses. While you might think this is not exactly clean, what would you do when you are the only one dealing with an aggressive and nasty eBay fake flash memory seller. Fact is, the seller hasn’t a clue which buyer reported. Do we like this? No. Do we understand this? Oh yes we do! Do we take the frauded buyers report and put it in the database? Yes. And with pleasure, especially when we get the background from investigators. There are cases when a buyer doesn’t have a choice and we understand.
Some report the sellers to us with evidence, then they file for a refund.
Some think that when eBay refunds them, it was because of their own efforts, not the fact that FrankenFlash project sites have been turning up the heat for over 5 years. Sadly they forget the buyers in 2008, 2009 and 2010 who never got a refund. Many refused to return items as they knew the items would be resold and would violate postal regulations in their countries.
Some people, shocked, leave negative feedback, report to us, then fight their claim.
Some people leave negative feedback but when they get a refund, change the feedback to positive. They got their money back but are not concerned about what happens to the other buyers for the seller.
Some people warn others, fight their claims and no matter how the sellers might try to play games or insult them, stand their ground.
Some people learn fast. They are very sharp. Okay, they made a mistake, they learned from it. They might feel a bit stupid about being scammed, but it does not take them long to understand what is going on. They are people who get the facts and do not jump to conclusions.` They dig into the subject on the internet. They become either a FakeFlashAngel or a FakeFlashCommando. Both fight back.
So 5 years later what is the correct path in fighting flash memory fraud? Especially on eBay?
Well what we can see in hindsight is, people who believed in “Process” were dead wrong. They gave up. If “Process” worked, then the issue would be history, not longer an issue on eBay.
In recent months, eBay China has suddenly become very aggressive in selling fake memory. Why?
We don’t know. SOSFakeFlash can speculate on the fact that China has entered a serious recession. Factories and Fab’s are closing. There is a hugh inventory on low capacity flash memory chips nobody wants. Local brick and mortar stores, especially chains, are offering genuine flash memory at discounts never seen before, probably because of the surplus in flash memory chips, changing technology and new flash memory chip speeds.
The internet exposure on fake flash memory eBay China has increased. eBay China id’s have a very short life. eBay is in trouble, they can not afford to alienate Chinese eBay sellers. eBay would lose about 70% of their business if they actively went after fraudulent Chinese sellers. eBay would most likely shut down in a few months. It is the ugly truth.
You can expect an avalanche of China eBay ids to continue offering fake flash items.

The DT310/256GB Kingston DataTraveler usb flash drive has been discontinued. One of the major reasons? Counterfeiters. A Genuine Kingston DT310 rarely sold below $700 US. Why? The realistic price for the technology. Yet every day, potential resellers think they can buy them cheap. The end result is legal action against sellers who import the fakes. On eBay, it is a death sentence for any foolish seller. For a buyer on eBay it is misery and a long fight to claw back the money for the purchase. Why are people SO FOOLISH? It is a good question. SOSFakeFlash does not have the answer why people continue to purchase these fakes, what we do know is that counterfeit Kingston DT310 memory sticks have done more damage than any other flash drive ever sold.
The most dangerous place to buy a usb flash drive? From an internet wholesale site based in China.

Yes you can buy sony brand new usb flash drive 640gb at the internet site, c2offer, but you are going to buy a counterfeit and fake flash memory. It may only cost you $14 US and if you buy it, you are naive. In 2012 there are no 640GB usb flash drives. The highest capacity manufactured in 2012 for a usb flash drive pen stick is only 512GB and they are very expensive. Sony never made the usb flash drives offered by C2Coffer qsxcvb2010.
It periodically shows up on eBay for sale. Sellers who offer it don’t last very long. Most have the listings removed by eBay and often get a suspension for lisitng it.

The hotest item in flash memory to be sold with the biggest profit margin? The Kingston DT310/256GB memory stick! It is no longer offered by Kingston Technologies and has been replaced by the DataTraveler HyperX 3.0 selling for over $600 US. The DT310 was a great usb flash drive but became a victim of counterfeiters. It never sold below $700 US. Internet wholesale sites such as C2Coffer would have you believe you can buy DT310 for as little as $3 US. You can expect this fakes to be imported and sold by eBay sellers. At that price, they can not resist. If and when you discover they are counterfeits and fakes, your eBay seller will try to make you believe they are “defective”. They will try to make you return them and eBay will assist the sellers to make you revise your negative feedback.

DT310 256GB USB 2.0 Flash Memory Stick Drive Cost $3 US
The DT300 usb flash drive from Kingston Technologies was the pioneer for 256GB flash memory on a usb flash drive memory stick, it is a very popular fake offered by Chinese wholesale sites. You will find them on C2Coffer and eBay. The DT300 was a very expensive usb flash drive, big in size and long since discontinued by Kingston. It is the favorite fake flash pen drive sold by China eBay sellers. Foolish eBay sellers in Western countries offer it too. eBay sellers pay as little as $30 US for it, but that is not the price you will pay for your counterfeit DT300.

Did you bid and buy because you saw “Consumer Protection” in the fake flash memory seller’s listing? Did you pay $25 to $150 US for your fake DT310? How much did your eBay seller pay for the item? You can buy a DT310 fake on the internet C2Coffer wholesale site for as little as $3 US.
Get your calculator out! Start punching in the numbers and do the math for your fake flash eBay seller! A wholesale price of only $3 US for 256GB flash chip capacity SCREAMS – fake! Do not assume your eBay seller was naive, or a victim. Most eBay sellers who buy DT310 DataTraveler fakes do not risk their main eBay id any longer, instead they use child id’s. eBay will suspend the id, once exposed, but they will not automatically refund you for the fake flash memory purchase.

Fake Sony USB flash drives, where do they come from? There are many wholesale internet sites in China who offer them at very cheap prices. You can buy one for as little as $5 US per unit for an advertised capacity of 128GB. Many eBay resellers buy them, then list on eBay. Imagine if you can sell for $50 to $100 US. It is an amazing profit. Obviously it is impossible for a 128GB flash memory chip to cost only $5. The eBay sellers will try to do a markup for flash memory, that gives an impression of respectability to the untrained consumer eye.

So far no one is stupid enough to try and list a 1TB USB Flash Thumb Drive on eBay. There is no such capacity 1TB as available on the market for flash memory pendrives.
Not too long ago, 512GB flash drives stood out on eBay screaming FAKE. Not any longer, more foolish eBay sellers are listing them and eBay has difficulty keeping up with this false capacity.
So will fake usb flash drives start showing up on eBay? Yes. You can expect sellers at the moment to hide them under categories not obvious to eBay, eBay is not that smart. Fake Flash Memory sellers on eBay are smarter. They usually go this route when the capacity they advertise is suspect, they continue to do this until the capacity is actually manufactured by a brand name, then they grow bold. Fortunately no brand name has announced a thumb drive yet, at a real capacity of more than 256GB. When they do, all hell will brake loose on eBay and a new higher capacity of fakes will be come “normal” on eBay.

Buying a DT310 Kingston DataTraveler usb flash drive, BEWARE of fakes. Kingston Technologies did not make a DT310 at 512 GB capacity, you are buying a counterfeit and fake capacity.

Every day, new listings appear on eBay for DT310 DataTraveler usb flash drives and most don’t last very long as eBay under pressure from Kingston Technologies is forced to remove the counterfeits. eBay does not catch all the sellers, some survive for as long a week. A lot of eBay sellers rant and rave at SOSFakeFlash and FakeMemorySentinel, for being caught with DT310 fakes. Where did they buy them to sell on eBay? From an authorized Kingston reseller or Kingston Technologies? No. So far not one seller reported at either site has sent SOSFakeFlash an RMA from Kingston Technologies attesting to the fact the items were genuine Kingston products and indeed defective DT310 usb flash drives. They imported them from a Chinese internet wholesaling site. You can now buy them for as little as 2.90 US On Alibaba.com.
If eBay sellers were stupid enough to think they could get real capacity flash memory DT310 at such unbelievable prices, should you feel sorry for them? Who suffers most from their mistakes? Did they refund you the files you lost?
If eBay catches the seller, the id will most likely be suspended and you have a good chance of getting your money back for a DT310 fake. Should you be thanking eBay? If you answer yes, you are unfortunately ill informed as a flash memory victim on eBay. The only reason you might be getting your money back is because of the thousands of eBay buyers who have complained before you, the time they spent to warn other buyers for a seller and also the effort of volunteers who slave away at the FrankenFlash project sites trying to protect you and to force eBay to refund you.
Do not be naive in assuming it was solely your own effort that got you a refund. It is the pressure on a global internet scale that has helped you.
eBay sellers are blind, they do not research their product, they run to internet sites in China to import the fakes into their home country. You are the ones who pay the price for their greed and stupidity.
