The advertised size on the packaging is almost always: 16g 32g 60g 64g 120g 240g 250g 360g 500g 512g 640g 880g. A dead giveaway, shouting FAKE! Still resellers import them and sell them to unsuspecting buyers. You can still find them on eBay. Several years ago you found listings for them daily on eBay.
These days you will see them sold in open air markets around the world. You will find them sold on street corners too. Some buyers are suspicious but even the corner seller has a laptop ready to convince. A quick plug in, a few clicks to show the size reported by the operating system and the sale is made! It is the oldest trick in the book. USB flash controller chips have been upgraded and manipulated along with the flash storage chips to LIE about their real size. All you need is the right low level software reformatting programme.
They are even sold on local buses travelling dusty roads, or muddy ones from the daily rains, with the seller offering an interesting story of how he bought them at an amazing bargain. Only he doesn’t need them all and is willing to part with a few, but only a few… The rest are for his family and relatives. The buyer falls for the tale and feels privileged a stranger is willing to share his amazing good fortune.

Prices for the counterfeit Sony MicroVault usb flash drives are rising. They are no longer sold wholesale for as little as $5 US. The larger capacity fakes: 64g 120g 240g 250g 360g 500g 512g 640g 880g are being sold for a lot more wholesale. The reason is the market prices for the genuine higher capacities offered for thumb drives. It also commands a false reassurance to potential buyers that they are not fake. The sellers are willing to accommodate the illusion.
