There is a critical error in following the suggestions on this page. Testing the capacity with h2testw will destroy the contents if the memory is fake. You MUST save the data to a reliable drive before testing or the contents will be overwritten with test data. I’m not sure if this procedure is listed elsewhere on this massive site.

  2. It is a good practice try and copy data from a suspected memory card, flash drive or mp player before testing, if possible. It is how a lot of people discover they have a fake. At some point the transfer fails.

It is also a good practice for people to read Readme.txt file that comes with this software and most other software products before using. Not everyone does this.

h2testw read me file by software author Harald Bögeholz states it can not harm a flash memory drive. This is true……

    Read this please!

There are a lot of ways fakes are created. They don’t all use the same method or algorithm. Nor do they use the same techniques to fool.

ITGuy is the most qualified to explain details on different senarios from studing the output from h2testw reports.

Some reprogramming is sophisticated, others are butcher jobs.

The reprogramming is in the usb controller flash memory chip. It controls what the flash memory storage chip reports.

TheBlueAngel, your advice to try and copy data off to something else before testing is sound. Common sense. Logical. A good defensive approach.

In a lot of cases, people don’t have the time or space but they should consider it because there are two nasty senerios we have seen for fakes. Usually for usb flash drives.

    1) If the real capacity is exceeded the file allocation table suddenly becomes unreadable. Squiggles or ‘chinese characters’ as some describe it.

    2) The flash drive stops functioning – dies if you exceed the real capacity.

#1 often occurs for usb flash drive leather fakes, especially older models.

#2 often occurs for counterfeit kingston usb flash drives as effort was centered on appearance and packaging with worse possible grade d flash memory chips inside.

So it depends if you got a good quality fake or a poor one, you don’t know in advance.

Most sellers don’t want to be caught and tend to use better quality fakes to so they are not detected. It is not a good idea to offer items that demonstrate the #1 and #2 senarios.

Classifying fakes into quality categories, what next?

People should test with h2testw before using flash memory to store information instead of after loading data, but that is not always the case. Who expects they are going to get a fake? Or are suspicious.

One last thing, there is a 3rd senario.

Many of the digitally altered items perform their “tricks” by repeatedly overwriting the same area of the flash storage chip. It’s not my area of expertise. The point is, it causes a lot of wear leveling on a flash memory chip and reduces it’s life expectancy.

Some people are promoting resizing the partition of a fake flash memory chip to the size H2testw reports as a solution.

It is a dangerous and stupid solution. It does not address the real issue, clearing the hack from the usb controller chip. The hack must be cleared. There is only one way, finding the right low level software reformatting tool, period.

If a person has the third senario, not only does the hack remain, but the chip could very well continue to overwrite the small reserved space some hacks use on the flash memory chip. This means the chip is reducing in life expectancy every time it receives files and fast. Ugly? A ticking time bomb, not a sucessful repair.

TheBlueAngel so many different ways fakes are created.
