Why Is Fake Flash Memory So Dangerous?

Posted by techchips on January 20, 2010

Fake Flash Memory is false capacity memory. Flash nand memory chips have been reprogrammed to lie about their true capacity. They trick operating systems into believing they are bigger then they really are. Once you exceed the real capacity of the memory chip, you will lo0se data and files. There is no place on the memory chip.

Fakes are created by reprogramming the flash memory chip with special software. Certain usb flash controller chips have flaws. Fake Flash Memory sellers always seem to use the same chip sets.

Products affected are usb flash drives, MPx players and memory cards. A strong indicator of a fake, is the price paid. See Global Report – eBay Fake Memory 2008 – 2009

To make sure you did not purchase a fake flash memory item, you should always test it for capacity. The best tool is H2testw. It is free. To learn more about it read: H2testw 1.4 – Gold Standard In Detecting USB Counterfeit Drives

I think SOSFakeFlash and it’s affiliated sites should have a forum where it is easier to bring together support and information.

The problem with blog pages is the articles tend to cause user comments and feedback to be buried and split up, whereas forums would be ideal for new victims to get the support they may be looking for.

I have an epic story of my efforts to get justice out of paypal but I see no decent place on this site to post it. (FYI: The story is still ongoing and I have 3 days to supply proof I destroyed the item or they will reject my claim – 3 days given to me at 5.25pm on a Saturday out of office hours when I have no way of using a fax machine and their ‘system’ is not accepting my uploads from either FF or IE browsers.)

Well I’ve got the same problem, cant get refund from PAYPAL, have to fax them a proof that the flash drives are truely fake. Paypal don’t even try to reach the customer, ask for photos or do anything, to get the situation a bit clear. I’m disapointed about the way, paypal is operating to solve the cases…….
    sad…….
I’ll try to find company, which could write a document, for proovement

I also lost ~100 dollars on fake flash drives ($18 a piece), aliexpress claims that they have an escrow service, that will protect a buyer, I filed a claim will see what will happen. the drives were supposed to be 128 gb and actually are ~ 1gb…. so this was my $100 IQ test and I flanked it…
