Where To Download Alcor Tools To Fix Fake USB Flash Drives
Posted by KittyFireFlash on November 1, 2008
Recently SOSFakeFlash put out a call to people who managed to reprogramme a fake flash drive purchased from eBay. See Did You Manage to Reprogramme a Fake Flash Drive Bought on eBay? Contributions are starting to arrive. To determine your chip set see Repairing Counterfeit Flash Drives
carlton has contributed detailed information for Flash drives identified as having an Alcor Controller chip and the software files to assist you.

Where to download Alcor tools to fix fake USB flash drives
Directions:
1. Download & install
Alcor UFD Manufacture Programm (AU9386 V1.10)
To identify proper VID & PID (bottom left corner)
2. Download AlcorMP (080829) AU6981/AU6983/AU6986
OR
one of the other AlcorMP versions, according to your chipset.
3. Install Proper VID & PID with LoadDriver.exe
4. Low Level Format with AlcorMP.exe
Try each AlcorMP version until one recognizes your drive
Here is the drive that Carlton repaired:
My Results
Chipset:
Alcor au6983hl
SPECTEK FBNL52AHGK3WG-AT

We all thank Carlton for his efforts to assist other victims of fake flash who have determined they have an alcor based controller in their flash drive.
Note: in using any tools that do low level formats or reprogramming, there is always a risk of losing the drive. It is very important to be sure your drive has an alcor controller – using the wrong software can result in the drive becoming unusable. So proceed with care on your rescue mission. You should consider rescue if you are unable to reclaim your money from a fake flash seller.
If you have sufferred a triple cheat:
1. victimized by an eBay fake flash seller
2. victimized by eBay refusing to listen to your cries of fake flash suffering and data loss – refusing to do anything against the seller or and assist you in reclaiming your hard earned money
3. victmized by Robotic PayPal determined to out do both Fake Flash Seller and eBay in making your life a misery and keeping your money
This is a consolation option you have to rescue an alcor controller based usb flash drive fake.
You may wish to keep track of the time you spent trying to save the drive and inflict the same amount of time and misery on all three victimzers – by contacting others who bought the same drive as you did. You will do good deeds: warning others as you wished you had been warned, increasing the army of fake flash victims marching to eBay and PayPal and finally allowing other flash drives to become their true capacity.
If you have been fully refunded by PayPal and you have been asked to destroy the drive as a condition of refund, you are obliged to do so if you accepted the refund. In that case send the counterfeit drive to fake flash heaven or send it to the local police with details to increase awareness on the fake flash situation. It is amazing that so few know about it – most find out only when they discover they have become a victim of fake flash and the resulting data loss.

I agree with kittyfireflash that care must be taken when using these tools to avoid unrepairable damage.
However, I would also like to say this, I tried each of these Alcor tools, several times each, before finding the right combination that allowed any of the Alcor Tools to recognize my drive whatsoever. No action is available until the software sees both an Alcor controller and one of the preprogrammed memory chipsets that the software version is designed to work with.
That’s one reason why there are so many versions of Alcor tools, each new combination of controller and memory has to have it’s own correct version. Furthermore, none of the tools worked for me until I discovered the proper VID and PID for my chipset combination. That was a challange as my memory chips don’t have their own version that I could find, but with the proper VID/PID numbers, Alcor sees it as a combination that uses identical memory chips from a different mfg.
In summary, while not a guarantee, I believe these tools are rather safe as far as not working with improper chip combinations.
One other note, when using the programs, there is a Setup button. Clicking it brings up a blank password screen, several times I just hit Cancel because I didn’t want to set a password. However, if you set no password and hit OK, it does take you to a Setup screen with lots and lots of settings.
In those setup menus, one options of the low level format is optimization. You can select to optimize for Capacity, or optimize for Speed.
I tried both, and my capacity was the same either way. However, my speed was 2mb/s optimized for capacity, and 6-10mb/s optimized for Speed. The default is Capacity. In some of the other tabs you can set your drive device ID & number, which I found a good place to put my name and phone number. That won’t be easily erased without Alcor tools.
Good luck folks. I invested a bit of time fixing my drive, and had to figure out how to download these tools from Russian and Chinese web sites. After all the time I invested, it only took a few more minutes to share these tools and info, I hope it helps.
I’m surprised how popular the download are, having been posted barely over a day ago. One source shows me the country of the downloader. From what I’m seeing, there must be millions of Fake USB drives being sold.
Tnanks to kittyfireflash and sosfakeflash for helping us with this great resource.
Thank you emails always brighten my day. 🙂

I´ve decided to share in rapidshare mptv2.4.0007 (sorry, is in chinese) for CCM3110
VID = DC08 PID = EF0B
http://rapidshare.com/files/219315910/MPT_V2.4.0007_beta.zip
I´ve managed to use it. You must put the same flash that the program gives you, when you plug the pendrive, in the configuration (second button in upper right) and then reflash (first button in upper right)
Any questions with the program please write me to my mail or here.

Can someone please repost MPT v2.4.0007? The rapidshare link is always full. Thanks!!

We don’t set up downloads. They are contributed by victims who upload them to different sites. This particular share was set up in the Fall of 2008 and it is very hot on the internet. When things are free there are limitations.
You might have to try a few times – a heavy load on the server means a lot of victims needing help.
To Everyone
If some people have time and can download and upload to other share sites, please help out. Send us a list of url addresses for the files and we will then update the post to give alternative download sites to distribute the load for the increasing demand for the tools.

ITGuy said
For Vanda McIntosh
There are a number of reasons why this could happen. The most likely cause is an IO error when doing the high level format. In this case the best thing to do is throw the drive in the garbage as it is not worth fixing.
If the error msg was
Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other
programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is
displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again
….try closing all programs etc before doibf format

Would it be fair to sort out and start sending all the fake drives info to the real stuff manufacturers, like Samsung, Panasonic, etc, so they might want to sue eBay for supporting (well, for not taking proper care of) piracy. I bet those guys are losing quite a few bucks because of this fraud on eBay.
Just a thought…
kittyfireflash said
Hi DG,
That is an interesting idea. Brand name manufacturers are aware of the issue. It is not something they want to advertise or have known globally. The issue is their reputation. The manufacturers of memory chips sell them to other sources who then use them in mp players, usb flash drives and memory cards. Companies such as ie, Sandisk, Kingston, Sony use these chips in their products. Kingston is one company that is aggressively forcing eBay to remove any listings that appear to be counterfeits of their products (ie not made by them, obvious false capacity). eBay quakes when Kingston comes calling!
Yes, it would be a good idea for other brand names to carefully examine eBay and follow Kingston’s example. If they would provide hotline numbers – toll free around the world, SOSFakeFlash and other FrankenFlash Project sites would be happy to provide this information to victims. It would then assist the brand names to deal with eBay. Email addresses would be very useful as well.
Some brand names for finished products do have validation pages to assist buyers in verifying if they received a counterfeit. TechChips at http://flashchiptech.wordpress.com/ is striving to list links directly to brandname manufacturers for validation and also information to decode the actual capacity of chips when victims open the items.
Everyone need to know we are volenteers. We do not get paid for this work, sigh! We do not work for brand name companies.

Here’s the part numbers I pulled after opening the drive:
FC8308-D (Alcor Controller?)

Would I use the VID/PID reported by chipgenius, or would I have to find other VID/PID.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Can someone please tell me where this USB repair software comes from? You said you may have to wait a few months for someone to upload the software. Where does that someone get the software?
InspectorTech said
Jim,
Software comes from China.
1) To prepare usb flash memory, low level format it, software is needed.
2) Software used depends on the usb controller chip family. See http://fixfakeflash.wordpress.com/category/flash-chip-vendor/ We don’t like the category name but use it for compatibility with chipgenius.
3) The chip vendors for the controller chip issue the software. The versions change when the controller chip changes and or a different group of flash storage chips are in the database (more current chips?).
4) The software is used in factories assembling the product (usb flash drives, memory cards, mp players.
5) Most software is in chinese. Some versions have an english interface, they are fewer and jump in version numbers more quickly.
Now…
The software for the vendors is not strictly controlled. Not under lock and key. It ends up on the internet in China and else where. In some cases it is modified. Not going to say more here about this. You can read between the lines.
It can also be purchased at some chinese internet sites. Eventually it leaks out and gets distributed aboard. Victims of fake flash memory chase the bread crumb trail.
One of the biggest and best collectors is the Russian site. They have helped many. However, you don’t know who used the software last or uploaded it. So as with any download, you scan it before opening and using.
As these tools save the last user settings, we advise people to do an inspection of the manual settings not just click and go.
a) make sure ecc is not open – critical!
b) check the vid and pid settings against yours, if they differ you will have the vid and pid settings set in the tool, unless you change it to match yours from chipgenius. Surprised?
*** we have been advising people to open the items carefully and do a manual inspection of the usb controller chip and also the flash storage chip. Write it all down on paper. If all is well the report from chipgenuis will match what you see by opening. If it does not and this happens, you search by what the chip serial says, not information from chipgenius. ****

Thanks for the quick reply. I have another question. I don’t have any bad USBs, but out of curiousity, I wanted to see what one of those fix USB softwares look like on my computer. So I connected my USB, downloaded Alcor698X, clicked on AlcorMP.exe.
The USB did not appear in the software and I did not click any buttons to try formatting. I then deleted the software. However, now when I insert ANY USB in the computer, I don’t get the green USB notification and therefore can’t “stop” the USB in the normal way for “safe to remove”. I would really like to know how to solve this problem. I have detailed this on another website, where you can see screenshots. Please take a look:
http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/320634-Question-about-deleting-USB-drivers-to-fix-lack-of-USB-notification
If I can’t fix this problem, I will have to restore Windows from a 2 year old image (a lot of work because then I have to re install a lot of software.
Jimdays said
I want to add to my last comment. The USBs still work fine on my computer. I can see the USB drive in “My Computer”, and I can read and write on any USBs no problem. It is just that I don’t get the green USB notification and therefore can’t stop the USB in the normal way for “safe to remove”. I have to say that little things like this really bother me.
InspectorTech said
I recall this problem from a long time ago. Saw it on a number of computers – it did not have anything to do with low level formatting software. It did have something to do with usb hard disks and usb flash drives (external). Some sort of bug that can be caused by a number of things. It was very long ago.
Not sure if I removed the drive letter from windows explorer(removable storage), or disk management (have of drive letter name) or if I went into control panel advanced options, hardware, then removed the usb controller. Or even if it was a combination of actions. After rebooting and later reinserting a usb removal device, things worked again.
The reason I don’t remember is that the actions to fix were different per computer, not the same.
Did you check the knowledge bases at Microsoft? I would not restore an image without trying to fix it. If you have an image to restore from it does not hurt to try things out. There were issues in XP in SP1 and SP2, not sure about SP3.
You don’t say what your OS is Jim.
The drive letter assignment in disk management and forcing a usb controller reconfig (what happens when you remove from the hardward and reboot)are the things that come to mind the most.
See this comment http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-xp/fix-for-system-tray-icon-missing-in-windows-xp/#comment-1845
From what you have described it is the icon in the sys tray that is missing. It’s a bug that really does not have a well described cause. rbsmith2000 comment is probably what you should look at first.

My fake Kingston 8GB contains AU6980 controller and the NAND is Samsung K512H1GACA-A075, but there is no configuration for NAND chip in AU6980 Tool. I checked Samsung product search web site and no such chip available, all the NANDS from samsung starts from K9XXXXXXXX. Does anybody cn give me a clue?

I just had a stroke of luck fixing two fake USBs this weekend after trying unsuccessfully in months.
For both USBs, chip genius returned a VID of 058F and a PID of 9380 (for all those with similar numbers, keep reading). Alcor is the manufacturer i both cases.
One of the fake ones is a Kingston USB. I finally decided to crack it open, and it opened without much trouble. I then found the code on the flash chip: FC8308 A699393-1F 0924D4. I googled FC8308 and found that the tool FC_MPTOOL will fix it.
After trying two versions of FC_MPTOOL, I finally fixed the two USBs with FC_MPTOOL v03.00-something with a guide I found following links from google. So now instead of two fake 16GBs I have two good 7GBs (yes, it probably is 8GB but shows up as 7GB in windows). H2testw reported no problems after fixing the USBs.
Moral of the story: prepare to spend a lot of time googling and/or risking cracking open your fake USBs.
