Repairing Counterfeit Flash Drives
Posted by KittyFireFlash on October 25, 2008
SOSFakeFlash has been asked by many victims of fake flash drive purchases – how to restore to the original true capacity? Electrostorm has provided excellent information to the tools you would need to deprogramme FrankenFlash.
See Repairing Counterfeit Fake MP Players For MP Players.
Mentioned previously (see: Did You Manage to Reprogramme a Fake Flash Drive Bought on eBay?), to repair a drive you need to know about the controller and the flash chips. To do this you need software that will provide this information. Once you have it, you need to find the right software to reflash the chip and perform the low level formatting of the drive. We are providing the links and steps submitted by Electrostorm. Understand that this could repair a fake – but not in all cases. You could lose the drive in attempting to repair – especially if you chose the wrong tool. Not all drives can be rescued and returned to their real capacity – but many have been.

To restore most fake capacity USB flash memory devices.
Step 1:
Download chipgenius, this program will automatically detect an inserted flash drive and read out the 4 digit VID code and 4 digit PID code.
http://www.mydigit.cn/mytool/ChipGenius.rar
If you don’t have a software that can unzip the “rar” format, please get the software 7-zip from:
Step 2:
Go to the iFlash website and search for a matching VID and PID, download the corresponding software from the site.
http://www.flashboot.ru/index.php?name=iflash
Translated to English (recommended)
In most cases I have been able to use the software provided to reflash the controller chip and do a low level format and restore correct capacity.
Once you have repaired the drive using the steps and software above – you need to format the drive in your operating system. After operating system formatting you should once again test the capacity of the drive to ensure that you have truly succeeded. Use the tool H2testw 1.4 once more again. If you are able to write, read and verify without errors – you now have a flash drive you can store data on. It may be a lot smaller but the capacity will be real.
If you chose to try and repair your drive using the information presented here, please return and leave your feedback indicating your success or failure in returning a drive back to it’s original capacity.
Update 20091023: Please consult the new FAQ at FixFakeFlash Inspectortech for important information on repairing fake flash memory items before you attempt to repair.

Trying one of ChaiChing28’s 16GB-really-4GB devices, I get :
PnP Device ID: VID = 0000 PID = 7777
Serial Number: FA0B55C2
Revision: 8.00
Device Type: Standard USB device – USB2.0 High-Speed
Chip Vendor: Alcor(??)
Chip Part-Number: AU6986
Product Vendor: Generic
Product Model: Flash Disk
The FlashBoot site tells me they don’t have a fix for it, and they’ve only seen it as being a 32GB fake. The ChipGenius tool links to another site bbs.mydigit.cn/read.php?tid=20620 … which is in Chinese. After Google has done it’s job …
Well, that seems clear enough (?!) – search for the main chip type, in this case, the “AU6986”.
Which returns … 3 hits, all neatly grouped. The most recent posting reads … pretty fractured translation, with screenshots of a program with Chinese (well, non-Latin ideographic) script.
I think I’m going to give that a miss, and instead try my plan B. Which involves re-booting into Linux, so I’m going to have to stop and leave this comment unfinished.

Looks simple got the vid and pid. Found link and match for drive but could not find any software to download. …….
kittyfireflash said
Did you try to google for the vid and pid on the internet as well? In some cases at the site there may not yet be a recorded match. However there might be a report that says what controller and chip – sometimes the tool set software needed. Most of these reflash tools can repair a series. They often recognize the flash drives to.
It is a challenge sometimes and why up to now we never published anything on the subject.
What we need is for people to report their successes to sosfakeflashdrive@gmail.com . If they can give us the ebay item number info, we can check the database to see if it is listed. If so we can start building a list – like we have for the mugshot reports. This would make it a lot easier for people to identify and fix drives.

I. My FAKE 8GB USB Drive is actually 1GB in capacity with a MW6208E controller and Toshiba TC58NVG3D4CTGI0 memory unit. VID=2001 PID=2008
II. You can fix your drive with an utility http://www.bloggybloggy.com/randomdownloads/UdTools1.0.4.0B_20080714.zip
just click on the button with your drive disk name (ex. “X:”)
Mine has been fixed with the substraction of some bad area, so it is now 946 MB available.
III. I have added the information to the iFlash list – you can check it out (http://flashboot.ru/iflash.html)
IV. Thanks people for this website – I was pleased and proud of you, you do the right thing, thanks again!

I have the same chip on my fake 16 GB flash from hubaobao9898. I run the h2testw 1.4, save the log file, then try to fix the disk size.
On the translated russian site I click Files on the left side, in the 4. row. Go there, find the program: udtools1_0_4_6_20081010, and try to download. I have a problem with this, because it is a translated site, so I go to the original link, and find the file on the same place, like the translated site. It name written with latin letters, so you can find it easy. This program easily identify your chip – the program code the flash drive to 4 GB from 16 GB. Today I write to the seller, and send the log file to him. I will be back…:)

To Brian:
You did the right thing. The seller may request the flash drive back for a refund – do not do it – say him you have proved it is counterfeit (good place to include h2testw results) and you cannot send counterfeit stuff because you are not a scam like him. Tell him also, that you will report him on eBay, Paypal and, with capital letters, HONG KONG POLICE 🙂 I sent such a message to my scam and it worked – bastard refunded me in minutes 🙂 Anyway, good luck!

I’ve used the HP tool on a number of drives which it reformates to show always the same size 3.9GB. When I use the h2testw to check they are prove to be only 1.9GB with errors upto 3.9GB. On one drive only with size greater than 4GB it reformated to be 3.9GB with no errors. Does anyone knows how to reformate fake drives with V=0000 Pid 7777 Alcor?

To Paul,
In testing for the past week on fake flash drives for
MXT6208
PnP Device ID: VID = 2000 PID = 2008
PnP Device ID: VID = 2008 PID = 2018
I had similar issues. The HP Tools chose to double the size of the true capacity. I know this as a fact because when the drives were opened there are quality control stickers indicating a 2GB flash drive chip.
I have used the “correct tools” for this controller and have reformated, however, when using h2testw, I still get a small error of about 48 MB. If I use an ancient program (goes back to Windows NT) called ChkFlsh.exe that will test, I get an okay all is well.
This is one of the reasons we have not tried to publish info on the subject for so long. Repairing drives is trickly and also very risky.
Many of the chips in these “fakes” are factory seconds – chips not good enought to make it into a brand drive name.
The other thing, very disturbing is that the reprogamming tools can chose what the VID and the PID is. Yes lying about that too. This compounds the issue as the wrong info for refomatting is also present.
The last resort – depends on the model you have. Can you take it apart easily without damage. My fakes I tested, have an expoxy glue that holds the circuit board in place, removing it leads to later wiggle and giggle for the drive.
Testing shows that HP Tools while it helps alot is not the best solution. Your results and mine indicate this.
If you can, take the drive apart (remembering what you did).
Decode the controller chip (usually the smaller chip), then the flash drive chip. Then search the internet on both, to see what you come up with and any tools suggested to do the low level format. It is your last option. It is also a gamble. If you flash the controller incorrectly – you could lose the drive.
In dealing with eBay fakes, I am not certain but the best route to help people is for somebody who succeeded to report the solution, with the seller id, and the ebay item number (see our mugshot reports). Based on that we could post a solution for that drive model for others to follow. I know it is very long winded but it would be very precise. We could post the photo of the drive repaired. It could assist others who bought fakes from other sellers where the photo of the model is pretty much the same.
We are considering a new site just to deal with the solutions. Does anyone think this is a good idea?

Thanks kittyfireflash for feedback.
Updating previous, I used “chipgenius” to identify VID0000 & PID7777 and manufacture Alcor with AU6986 on 3 of my drives and did an internet search and downloaded the programme shown previously above. This allowed me to reflash successfully 1 Drive. This tool showed a completely different PID & VID number. I dont know if this tool selects always the same numbers. On a second drives after a number of tries it suddendly saw the drive and allowed successful reformating. I dont know how that happened. On a third Alcor drive with VID0000 & PID7777 as others this is just not seen so could not be reformated. Why this drive is different I’ve no idea. I might take it apart later and check chips fitted. The 2 drives successfully reformated passed the read/write test without any errors.
Any ideas for correct tool for VID=0DD8, PID=E203 C*Core

To Paul:
I advice you to do what Kittyfireflash said on his previous post – try (careful) to open the case and inspect the controller and memory chip – maybe they’re different from your two you have successfully formatted. And check if the tool you used to format is not up-to-date – maybe the newest version could deal with your last drive.
Good luck, anyway!
P.S. At least, you succeeded with 2 of 3 drives – not bad, in my opinion!

Took Dennis advice I tried again, took the drive apart and found Alcor AU8983, did a google search and found the right tool. This 2GB drive is now fixed but has 268kbs of bad sectors so is of questionable use.
A have another drive which has a C*Core CCM3108 control chip with a FBNL52AHGK3WG MEMORY CHIP. I can find no information about how to flash this drive. any advice?
Also has anybody been able to flash SD memory cards as I bought a number off eBay 6 months ago before I knew about all these fakes. These read 4GB but are really only 1GB.

KittyFireFlash said
To Joe London,
Have had a look at the drive model. As you can’t determine the VID or PID you only have one option left – try to take it apart. You will have to be very careful and gentle and may want to write down the steps as you carry them out so you can put the drive back together afterwards. Not sure how easy it is for this drive model.
You will need to find the little square black chip. Hopefully you have good eyes or a very strong light or a magnifying glass. You need to find the serial markings for the chip the first sequence should identify the chip vendor. For example: MXT6208, AU6983
Next look for a rectangular square(s) this will be the flash drive chip itself. Again take down the full serial number information.
Armed with this information go back to http://www.flashboot.ru/index.php?name=iflash and see if you can find any tools that match. In your case it is the controller chip vendor that matters ie MXT6208, AU6983. If you find software download and then carry out the instructions as mentioned by others. You might have to try more than one tool. They are often smart enought to identify the drive. You should load the tool(s) to see if it will match the information you wrote down. If it matchs the controller and choses a flash drive chip, leave it be. If it does not – then you might have to go to manual and see if there is a listing for the flash drive chip.
Understand it is risky if you use the wrong tool, but if you are stuck with a fake, you don’t have much to loose by trying. Let us know the info given helps you to succeed.

To praveencavale,
Based on the info you provided, in searching the site we use for the chip part number a program came up. The tool you used was wrong as that is for chip vendors (AMECO,Micov )your controller chip vendor is C*Core. In researching the internet only sites in China came up for the latest beta tools and we could not access the bulliten boards to get to a download.
At the flash boot site the program:
CCM3108-B2.151B MPT
Came up. This is your best option to try. See:
http://flashboot.ru/index.php?name=Files&op=view_file&lid=111
or in translation to english mode:
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://flashboot.ru/index.php%3Fname%3DFiles%26op%3Dview_file%26lid%3D111&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=5&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3DCCM3108%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dopera%26rls%3Den%26hs%3DKTR
Try out this tool to see if will recognize your drive. We have not used this tool, so read through the posts and also at the new site for solutions at http://fixfakeflash.wordpress.com/ to read for clues on how you might operate the tool if you are uncomfortable with it.
Let us know the results, praveencavale. If it does the trick we definately would like you to consider a solution contribution at the new site. We don’t have anything yet for C*Core. This one appears to be rare.
Who did you buy the flash drive from? This could help other people facing your situation and quest to repair the drive.

Does anybody here know of a flash tool for this ?

To Chris with samsung k9lag08u0b.
I have checked to see what Samsung offers in flash chips. I found:
MLC Flash 8Gb-based 2KB/page 16Gb DDP
K9LAG08U0A-PCB0
You found in your drive:
K9LAG08U0B-PCB0000
using google there was only one supplier offering K9LAG08U0B.
I used the most recent catologue offered from Samsung – Q4 2008. This means that the flash drive chip is extremely new (not yet even listed by samsung) or is a forgery. I would suggest Chris that you send an email to samsung and ask if they have such a chip being produced (K9LAG08U0B-PCB0000). Let them know you have a chip with K9LAG08U0B as the identification. Depending on what they tell you might like to give them the source of your purchase (ebay item number, seller and even the address if you have it from the package of from the seller if you were asked to return) In either case it does explain why it is not being detected.
Everyone should also be aware that some chips are experimental – try out ideas by a memory manufacturer. Some chip ideas are discarded. Normally these chips should be destroyed but unfortunately are not. Experimental chips never make it into the catolgue for a manufacturer.
It is not clear if you have an experimental, a new flash drive that is a work in progress with kinks not yet ironed out or a genuine chip forgery. It is not only digitally altered pen drives that is happening, there is a very big black market in forgeries of flash chips occuring in the orient. It is hurting the brand name manufacturers big time.
Let us know what samsung has to say. They may have a serious interest in your drive. Deciding what to do depends on what they have to say. If it is a new chip gone wrong, you may just have to wait for a new version of a tool to come out to repair the drive. Some of us have been that situation, waiting several months until a newer tool appears to succeed in reflashing.

But if you feel that device is defective, I´d like to recommend you to contact the person/shop that you purchased that flash drive.”
I also asked them for any flash utility but they never addressed that issue. I have replied to them.

From samsung again – “Hello chris young ,
Thank you for your inquiry to Samsung Semiconductor.
First of all, I´d like to calrify onething. K9LAG08U0B is 16Gb(bit), not 16GB(Byte) device. Considering 1B(Byte)=8b(bit), then K9LAG08U0B is compatable with 2.0GB(Byte).
In general, some portion of memory are used for controller firmware & reserved block. Therefore, normally actual memory size that end user can use is a little bit smaller than actual full density of device. Thta´s pretty normal.
If you´re asking whether there is any utility that you can resize to original size, I´m afraid to say we don´t have such a thing. But if your device is really 16GB, not 16Gb, but you feels you can use only 2GB out of 16GB, then it´s defective device and you had better claim to the company/shop that you purchased that device.”
So it seems i’m stuck with a dodgy drive and no hope of fixing it. It is a genuine chip but only 16Gb not the advertised 16GB oh well at least i got a full refund so this thing can sit in my draw until someone builds a flash util for it.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Inspectortech,
Thanks for the info. I tried the software(CCM3108-B2.151B MPT) it did recognize the chip(it shows micron name). The software is in chinese so couldnt understand anything but i clicked on the button right next to it. Then, removed the drive inserted it again and did the normal formatting, it says “format did not complete”. Please help.
I bought this crap from a stranger on bus who said his friend was working in kingston and had got it for cheap price.
KittyFireFlash said
Hi praveencavale,
I’ve been in your shoes. The software available at the site is older then what is seen on the chinese sites. We have to wait till somebody gets their hands on a later version of the tool and uploads it to the site for CCM3108.
I had about 10 fakes that sat in a glass jar for several months because the older tool MXT6208_MPTool gave me the same sort of errors or H2testw 1.4 still gave errors. Then UdTools1.0.4.0B_20080714 was uploaded to the site a little while back. Suddenly my different flash drive chips were recognized and even formatted – all in one shot.
So the key is patience. If the tool does not autodetect the chip. Newer chips will not be understood by older flashing programs. The detection has to be added into the software for flash chip drives.
Keep an eye on the flashboot site. These folks have done a wonderful job and people are continously adding contributions and information to help others!
I didn’t give up on my little fakes that failed. They are now healthy little innocent flash drives again!

C*core CCM3108
checked out the flashboot site.
http://www.flashboot.ru/index.php?name=Files&op=view_file&lid=111
Top of the page is the translator. This is one of the new chips we have been looking for a “Solutions” for the fix fake flash site. The date is very fresh 20081231 so it is possible somebody found the more recent software needed. Let us know the results. If you succeed, please send in the receipy (see fix fake flash site for what we post). This is one card missing from the fake flash repair deck!
Tried this software already, it sees the chip but wont allow reformatting of the memory.

Yesterday I purchased a 32 GB Kingston Pendrive Which I found out to be fake one.
It shows & formats (32 GB Full Capacity) in Windows Explorer (windows xp, Vista)
wihout any error.
In order to fix it & know its Actual Capacity I ran some programes.
Now the problem is : It only shows 8 MB and windows cannto format it.
I googled and found some tools but thet didnt work :
Tools Used :
PDx8_2k_v327.exe (PortFree Production Program version 3.27. [Flash Disk test.zip]) – Which actual did bad i think.
MPTool-2007103-Fix-Usb-key :- Did not detect the pendrive
UdTools1.0.4.6_20081010 :- Did not detect the pendrive
ChipGenius.exe :- Gave the following result :
Device Name: +[J:]+USB Mass Storage Device(Generic Flash Disk 2.0 USB Device)
PnP Device ID: VID = 2000 PID = 2008
Serial Number: 6&&C7FC0C7&&0&&2
Revision: 2.80
Device Type: Standard USB device – USB2.0 High-Speed
Chip Vendor: micov(???)
Chip Part-Number: MXT6208
Product Vendor: Generic
Product Model: Flash Disk 2.0
Tools on Web: http://bbs.mydigit.cn/read.php?tid=16769
I also opned the USB Pendrive Plastic Case & found the following Chip Number (Controler Number I think) : – HUC2168
HISUN
IPL04803.3
08HT0724
The number is different than the one shown by CHIPGENIUS.
Now How do I fix it :
1) Either to its Original State 32 GB (showed & formated well)
2) Or to its ACTUAL CAPACITY (Which is for shore >= 1 GB)
Please Help

To rohit -> The C*core chip is a problem. There is little info at the flashboot site yet for this one. The only program appears to be
http://www.flashboot.ru/index.php?name=Files&op=view_file&lid=111
There are references to newer programmes but at the chinese sites – the issue is how to get hands on them and good ones. So we have to wait for somebody to find and upload one that works!
To nagarani-> Write protect means that the reprogramming of the controller to “lie” was a very poor job – sloppy. You need to identify the controller chip and vendor information. Go to the http://fixfakeflash.wordpress.com/ site and read the article:
About VID PID Repairing Counterfeit Flash Drives – Steps To Succeed
You can only hope to repair once you know what tools you might need. Info in in that post. Also if you don’t find information that gives you results – you then have to do the last resort, carefully open the drive to identify the controller chip and the flash chip manually.
To zmint-> I have been there, with the 8MB thing. That happens when you use the wrong tool and is why it is so important to identify the right info (VID and PID) first or manually open the drive – BEFORE REFORMATTING low level. It is likely you accidentally wiped out the info on the controller. It’s happened to me. Your chances of repair now are so, so. The HUC2168 is one people are also asking for a program to be uploaded at the site. One does exist.
You have 2 choices:
Wait for a flash program for HUC2168 to appear, then try it out to see if it will recognize the controller and the flash drive.
or download the tool from: http://hddguru.com/
We have not mentioned this tool before because it can be VERY DANGEROUS TO USE! Why? It is normally used for low level formatting of hard drives. It does not exclude your hard disk(s) from the choices. So one mistake in choice and you could end up low level formatting the wrong drive – your hard disk! Anybody who uses this program, you do so at your own risk. If you don’t pay attention, you may regret it. I have used it a number of times and it has worked a number of times. It ignores the kind of controller you have for the usb drive. Again and I can’t say this enough, becareful if you use this tool. Make sure to uninstall the software from your computer when finished. Also if this tool is used, partitioning programs like Acronis Disk Disk Director will not detect the drive, Windows OS did for me.
About Low Level Reflashing Tools
Some times a tool is not yet available. Many people have had to await a while for a tool to appear at the site we suggest. The problem is a battle of updates. Why? There are always new controllers, new flash drives. The newer flash drive might not be in the recognition list. Every tool has a list of flash drives to recognize with parameters for it. If the flash drive chip is new, you will not find it in older software. When a later edition of the tool appears often the missing flash drive chip has been added and now the later version of the tool does the job just fine. So sometimes one has to be patient and wait. I waited 4 months to fix one of my fakes – until a newer version of the tool appears that would recognize that flash drive chip.
Another problem is in reprogamming the controller chips to lie, the wrong VID and PID is used. It happens. In that case the only thing to do when there is a known tool for the VID and PID – and it just will not work, is to open the drive (carefully) and manually identify the controller chip and flash drive chip and then begin the hunt for the right software again.

See a neat example of what we can have produced when people send their solutions to sosfakeflashdrive@gmail.com
Now when people search the net they will be finding a quick solution soon at the bots and spiders get a hold of it!

To Chung,
There does not seem to be data on this one. Just how difficult do you think it would be for you to carefully and gently open the drive? The object would be for you to find out exactly what the little square controller chip says and also what the flash chip(s) is.
I doubt you will really find any “Kingston” flash drive chip inside. The most important key to try and repair a fake is the controller chip. That determines the software you need to look for. Then the most recent tool version to better your chances that the flash drive chip is recognized.
Without a picture of the drive or the seller I can’t say if it is easy or hard to open.
The last resort is always to open the drive for the information needed. There can be risk – but if it is a fake it is no good to you as it is.

Today I oped my pen drive again and found the following
control No. : HUC2168
Memory Chip No. : ST8B2A-H
I have also found 2 tools (from chines site) which detect my Pendriv :
a) HUC2168 MPTool V20080522B.rar
b) HUC2168 MPTool V20080909.rar
Now How Do I use any of these tools to :
1) Either to re-flash my drive to its fake state 32 GB (showed & formated well)
2) Or to its ACTUAL CAPACITY (Which is for shore >= 1 GB)
Hlp. Pls. Thanks
