Posted by KittyFireFlash on September 2, 2008

H2testw 1.4 has proven itself to be the best of breed for detecting counterfeit Flash drives. It is extremely easy to use and proves detailed information. Created by Harald Bögeholz, the interface is in German but has the option to run in English. It is free and standalone.

New!  This article contains a poll you can vote on.

Nothing is installed into the operating system. Designed for Windows it can run under Linux if Wine is installed. It will not run under Macs as it is a Windows Software . If your computer can not run the software – ask a colleague or friend who has a windows based computer to help you test.  However if you are a Linux or Mac user we have good news for you,  keep reading. A software has been developed based on the idea of H2testw,  just for you.

Gold Standard rating for H2testw 1.4? Why do you give this software such a high rating?

We give H2testw 1.4 the highest rating and recommend it for testing counterfeit USB Flash Drives for the following reasons:

  1. Easy to Use
  2. While in German an English Execution is possible
  3. Stand alone executable file – no installation required to run it
  4. You do not need administrator privileges on a computer to run it
  5. Tested to work on 1.1 and 2.0 USB drives
  6. Tested to work on 1.1 and 2.0 USB Ports
  7. Tested to work to analyze drives advertised as 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and yes …64 GB capacity.
  8. Reports seen capacity – what the operating system sees size to be.
  9. Will write 1 GB files up to the reported size – requiring no work on your part except patience if it is a large drive and a slow computer
  10. Will read all the files it wrote and verify them
  11. Will produce a report. a) short if all is well b) detailed if there issues found.
  12. The program is offered free

The readme.txt file provides:

  • Explanation of the program and what it does for general computer users
  • Information on how to interpret the results
  • Technical information for those who have a deeper understanding of data storage and file writing and for the skeptics out there. Output results can easily be copy pasted into notepad to be saved as a text file.

H2testw v1.4

This is 4GB USB flash drive not a 64GB USB flash drive. It is of poor quality. As 4GB drive it should be about 3.9 GB not 3.8 GB formatted. This indicates in low level formatting a lot of bad sectors had to be locked out. Usually flash chips like these are rejected for major brands and should be destroyed. Unfortunately instead of the furnace flames these chips are leaving the back door of factories to be resold. These chips are a favorite for counterfeiters to reprogramme. Low cost, big profit.

The results from H2testw have been verified on drives detected as fakes. How?

  1. Drives were dissembled
  2. Controller chips identified
  3. Flash chip identified

Searches on the actual flash drives using their identification number revealed their true capacity. These matched the output from the H2testw Program.

In a few cases, when drives were disassembled, epoxy glue removed holding the flash drive to the bottom casing, quality control stickers were found with a size circled. The size? Exactly what H2testw reported as the capacity it could write to. All drives autopsied for investigation and validation of this program were purchased on eBay.

We do not see any other program that can match these features. Therefore, H2testw has been adopted as the Gold – Standard to detect and test fakes.

eBayers use this program to PROVE they have received a fake from a seller. It is confirmed with more eBayers reporting the same results for the same drive model. We have been able to prove this repeatedly, to the point we have only one conclusion. If a drive model fails capacity testing with H2testw then any for that listing on eBay is a fake. Having more eBayers test the same model only confirms what H2testw reported. The autopsies on counterfeit drives have also proven the value of this program. The report is a God send for eBayers who must file disputes. It gives them evidence to submit with their case.

If the drives you offer for sale are able to pass the testing of H2testw 1.4 – congratulations!

Please indicate this in your advertising or listings. Let prospective buyers know that you have tested. That your drives pass with the program and that you are able to guarantee the true advertised capacity (minus a small overhead for operating system file formatting.). I am currently testing an ebay 32GB microSD card, fingers crossed. Write speed is 5.20 MByte/s, so still hopeful! The dealers feedback did have a specific comment about correct capacity, and whilst I know feedback can be faked it gives me hope at least.

As regards earlier posts regarding differing classes of SD card, I doubt it would be possible to write a test for this. It is very dependant on your own hardware (Motherboard, card reader, adaptor if used, USB hub etc) Many do not realise the speed difference between a directly motherboard mounted USB port and a port on the front of the case, for example.

Many modern gadgets will read/write much quicker than a 5 year old PC – there are many 1080p cameras doing the rounds. These are the goods needing fast cards, and testing to these speeds would be impossible on many PCs, including mine!

(I write this purely as I understand it, with no reasoning other than my own enquiring mind allows….)

Wow! Cheap price. Why did you not list the eBay seller? The guys at SOSFAKEFLASH are looking for sellers who deliver.

Name the seller, list the item number. Otherwise nobody is going to belive you. I don’t believe you, convince me. No seller id = no proof of $20 for 16GB MicroSD HC Class 4 on ebay = real capacity. If you are going to use h2testw results include the eBay seller so we can BELIEVE!

  18. H2testw results for for good capacity are invalid for eBay, unless the poster includes the seller id.

People who wish to report good and valid capacity from an eBay seller should include:

    1. Test results.
    2. Item description
    3. item listing number
    4. eBay seller id

    Optional:

Your eBayer id attesting to the authenticy of the capactiy and the eBay seller.

Without 1-4, consider your comment in favour of eBay and a seller, invalid and not to be taken seriously. What reader is going to belive you if you don’t stand by your claim?

We require proof. Seth is correct. We have too much evidence from frauded buyers to believe, or should we say believe easily. Back up your claims for genuine capacity on eBay please. We do not see why you would not mention the seller who actually sold genuine capacity, in fact we would expect you to promote it!!!!!

Ebuyer Seth has challenged you. Reply. Back up your claim.

A small tool with big power. H2testW 1.4 is awesome. It helped me to find out that my memory cards where good!!!! Only one was fake: Transend 16 gig C10 purchased on EBay. But I was refund, yes refund. Maybe the guy in HK realized he had conterfeit. No card return he said, discard it. Then I started to make research on the web by typing: ”SDHC card fraud” in diferrent ways like: ”Fake memory sticks”. That’s how I have found H2testW 1.4.
When Transcend 16 gig came in by mail, I made a fast test by trying to write data (I didn’t knew H2testW at that time, but data stopped after 2 gigs. Tried again without success. Started to be suspicious….to finally e-mail to seller the card was defective. He offered me to refund at once or replace the card. I had refund. Please, be extremely careful when buying Memory card especially from Hong Kong and China.
I’m keeping the fake card to show people how a fake looks like.

I have a Lexar 32Gb usd card sourced from Amazon for use with a Samsung Galaxy SII smartphone. When rebooting the phone runs the media checker – and nevr stops. Using the card on my PC there are a lot of errors on the card. H2Test gives an error
“Error writing file ‘H:\1.h2w’, offset 0x24200000.
It is still possible to verify the test data written up to this point.
(The system cannot find the file specified. Code 2)
    Writing speed: 9.41 MByte/s
    H2testw v1.4″
When I select ‘OK’ it then states “Existing test data: 578Mbyte” and after selecting verify “Warning only 578 of 30516 MByte tested”.
Amazon has replaced like for like, but the new card shows exaclty the same.
Is this a problem with the card or H2Test?

You have a 16GB flash memory card from the test results for ebay seller fastflashstore. It may not be Samsung and it may not be Class 10, but it is 16GB capacity. It is not a fake capacity. It may be a counterfeit for Samsung. Please contact Samsung to find out if it is a counterfeit.

From your results, fastflashstore is not guilty of false capacity flash memory card. Only contacting Samsung will identify if it is counterfeit.
